Position Description:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for driving all marketing activities to enhance the image and public awareness of Downtown Roanoke and Downtown Roanoke, Inc. This position will be a central figure in promoting Downtown as a vibrant destination for business, an exciting place for cultural and entertainment opportunities and a desirable place to live. The Director of Marketing and Communications will provide leadership in development and coordination of public relations, special event marketing, and all other marketing efforts of Downtown Roanoke, Inc.
Position Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with CEO to develop a marketing strategy consistent with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, advancing the brand identity of Downtown Roanoke, Inc.
• Manage the implementation of the marketing plans and public relations strategy that will allow the organization to cultivate and enhance the relationships with external audiences including media, providing vision that will allow the organization to reach and exceed goals.
• Develop and manage Marketing budget to support department’s initiatives and activities
• Create and direct all communication efforts and publications including the Annual Report, marketing collateral, and electronic/interactive communications including website and social media.
• Maintain metrics and data for earned and paid media, events, social media, website, newsletter, and other activities to establish baselines for success and provide regular updates.
• Maintain steady press coverage and relationships with key media. Coordinate press releases, interviews/statements on behalf of the organization.
• Serve as the face and voice of the organization in the media and strategize with CEO in media engagement methods
• Assist the organization in further engaging and supporting stakeholders in new, innovative ways
• Assist with marketing and public relations for the Historic City Market, including development and marketing of promotional products
• Complete in a timely and professional manner special projects as assigned by the President/CEO
• Work closely with area partners, including the City of Roanoke, Roanoke Regional Partnership, and VBR to leverage marketing dollars
Required Skills and Abilities:
• Highly organized with very effective time management skills
• Extremely attentive to detail
• Must be a collaborative team player who is proactive with great initiative
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Experience with content management systems preferred
• Ability to supervise and manage project teams including staff and volunteers
• Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends
• Ability to work independently and self-manage long term goals
Experience and Education:
• Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year institution
• Marketing and public relations experience required
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite strongly preferred, but not required
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and follow through on issues in a timely manner
• Working understanding of html coding and basic web design principles preferred, but not required
• Strong interpersonal skills; will work closely with others in the organization, businesses in the Downtown district, and stakeholders
