Childcare and Nursery Worker Job Description
Job Title: Church Childcare Professional
Reports To: Minister for programs administered by the Christian Education Committee
Position Status: Part Time
Purpose:
To provide dependable, safe, secure and nurturing care to the children while at church, ages 0
up to 6 years old in a clean environment. Show Christ to the children and families who are in
need of nursery care during the worship and Sunday school hours as well as Wednesday night programs as needed.
Responsibilities:
o Responsible for providing age-appropriate care which includes:
o Feeding
o Changing diapers (Universal precautions should always be used while changing
diapers or interacting with any bodily fluids.)
o Escorting children to the bathroom
o Maintaining a safe environment
o Putting children down for naps
o Holding children if needed
o Sitting with and cheerfully interacting with children through games, stories, play
and prayer
o Displaying a Christ-like attitude to parents and children in all circumstances
o Reading Christian books and other Bible stories to children when time allows
o Be polite, courteous and friendly to all children, parents, and volunteers.
o Arrive 15 minutes to the start of Sunday school or 30 minutes prior to the Worship
service, whichever comes first. With the seasonal schedule in mind, child care hours
include every Sunday from 9:15am to 12:15pm. Wednesday night programming support as
needed. And support for special practices such as Christmas concerts or events as
requested. You’re expected to work all Sundays and Wednesdays even if they fall on a
holiday unless otherwise discussed. The request for special service coverage will be
announced at least 4 weeks prior to the event.
o Stay until children are secured with a responsible adult named on the child’s
registration/check-in form or badge.
o In the event of an emergency notify the parent via the communication system or cell
phone.
o Straighten the nursery room and clean any toys/beds before leaving the nursery. Used bed sheets will need to be placed in the dirty linen container and clean sheets are to be placed on the beds/cribs. Church staff or volunteers will be responsible for laundering the sheets. All toys that have had contact with saliva will require special attention with the sanitizing solution available in the nursery.
o Attend an evaluation after a 90-day period and thereafter annually.
o Report any issues to the nursery coordinator which hinder you from carrying out your
duties or responsibilities.
o Communicate in advance by phone to the Nursery Coordinator:
o For any planned absences with an advance two-week notice
o Any unplanned absences at least two hours prior to the shift
Qualifications:
• Experience in caring for children between the ages of 0 to 6 with the ability to adapt
and interact with a variety of personalities.
• At least 18 years of age
• Must be a High School Graduate
• Satisfactory completion of background check
• Must present the results of a current (within 1 year) Tuberculosis and current
immunizations
• Must maintain CPR training for infants and children
• Must adhere to Covenant Presbyterian Church Child and Youth Protection Policy
Guidelines as well as the specific Nursery Policy.

Termination Policy
• There will be a 90-day probationary period
• Dependability is essential. Tardiness and excessive absences cannot be tolerated and
will result in termination of employment. Immediate termination will occur in cases of intentional verbal, physical or emotional abuse or neglect of any described above or failure to comply with the Covenant Child and Youth Protection Policy in conjunction with the Nursery Policy.
Resignation Policy – The Church Childcare and Nursery Worker will provide a minimum of two
weeks’ notice to end their employment with Covenant Presbyterian Church.
