Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
This leadership position is responsible for the overall editorial management of strategic content, messaging, and high-priority digital media to support the three mission areas of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences ( CAES ).
The Associate Director mentors and oversees a team of editors and writers to develop clear and engaging content and messaging strategies to communicate the College's value across multiple audiences, including students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, government officials, stakeholders, and the public. The Associate Director also supervises and manages the UGA Extension Publications' Unit within the CAES Office of Marketing and Communication. In this responsibility, this role supervises the submission processes, database, and tracking systems for UGA Extension numbered publications (including large-scale annual publications), which constitute the majority of Extension web traffic and engagement on an annual basis.
This position provides oversight for a variety of publishing channels, including the College's new annual printed publication ( CAES Almanac), UGA Extension numbered publications, CAES' digital storytelling website (Cultivate) and other high-level web collateral.
This leadership position is responsible for the editorial and news calendar for the College and UGA Extension, and this role ensures that staff and satellite communicators adhere to university- and college-wide branding, voice, and style guidelines. This role hosts weekly college-wide meetings across all three campuses to foster collaboration for editorial opportunities.
In addition, this position also supervises the editorial process of CAES Newswire and Cultivate, from assigning stories, pitching stories, editing articles, and publishing content to various digital and printed platforms. This position liaises with CAES college-level and UGA Extension leadership to determine strategic priorities to inform editorial guidance for communications materials including traditional and digital media, publishing systems and workflows, and dynamic content campaigns.
The Associate Director is the main point of contact with UGA's Division of Marketing & Communications with regards to coordinating editorial content, strategizing story releases, and establishing publishing dates. This role is responsible for liaising with the UGA Office of Research communications team to ensure CAES and UGA Extension stories or features are included in their research editorial calendar and shared on their central platforms.
Additionally, the Associate Director helps to coordinate improvements within the CAES Office of Marketing and Communications including strategic planning, establishing optimized workflow practices, assessing staff structure and internal processes.
This role is responsible for reporting quarterly and monthly news metrics and providing Cultivate performance analytics and KPIs to the CAES Chief Communications Officer for various reports prepared for CAES leadership and the CAES Dean's Advisory Council. This role is also responsible for implementing strategies to increase CAES Newswire and Cultivate site visits and works closely with the OMC PR Coordinator and OMC Digital Marketing Specialist to increase press interactions to these content websites.
The Associate Director also acts as a support role for contract management and various onboarding needs for the CAES Office of Marketing and Communications.

Responsible for all CAES editorial and content planning needs and manages the CAES editorial team
• Leads weekly editorial and social media planning meetings among various cross-disciplinary participants from a multitude of CAES and UGA Extension offices.
• Manages consistent communications with UGA's Division of Marketing and Communications, contributing to overall editorial planning and providing weekly publishing schedules to university-level communicators, which leads to greater visibility on UGA Today and other central UGA platforms.
• Responsible for the , which garners over 500,000 views a year, and the supplemental weekly CAES Newswire newsletter that is sent to all CAES subscribers (approximately 4-5 stories a week).
• Manages the CAES unit of writers and editors to produce weekly news stories and features on CAES faculty and UGA Extension agents and specialists.

In charge of the UGA Extension Publications process from submission to publication
• Is responsible for the UGA Extension Publications unit (designer and editors) to make sure UGA Extension publications are edited and designed in a timely fashion for the consumption of the general public.
• Manages the CAES publications team that is responsible for the publishing of annual reports and publications, such as the UGA Pest Management Handbook.
• Creates and implements content strategies to integrate UGA Extension Publications' content into the CAES editorial calendar to amplify UGA Extension experts.
• Works in close partnership with the CAES Office of Information Technology to ensure the UGA Extension Publications process is transparent with CAES faculty.

• Partners with the CAES Chief Communications Officer on refining and implementing the overall visual and editorial quality of CAES content in support of the college's messaging priorities.
• Manages the primary digital storytelling platform for CAES () and oversees the building of Cultivate stories in Shorthand.
• In close partnership with Chief Communications Officer, this role leads the planning and development of the printed CAES annual publication called the CAES Almanac.
• This role is the final editor for the CAES Almanac , the CAES annual publication that is printed for 27,000 stakeholders nationwide and produced digitally ()
• Implements improvements in strategic planning, workflow, staff structure, internal processes, and website/technology infrastructure.
• Responsible for reporting quarterly and monthly news metrics, Cultivate performance analytics, and over content KPIs to the CAES Chief Communications Officer for various reports sent to CAES leadership and the CAES Dean's Advisory Council; and aims to increase subscribers and page views on CAES Newswire and Cultivate platforms.
• This role is the "second-in-command" for the CAES Office of Marketing and Communications team when the Chief Communications Officer is tending to other matters that arise or on travel.
