Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
The successful candidate for this position will work independently and with other faculty (4-5) and graduate students (12-18) in the department of FST on the Athens campus. This position will involve minimal supervision and the laboratory professional will provide technical support to researchers in the Department of FST in managing the food chemistry, analysis, and quality laboratories. This individual will also assist with laboratory instruction associated with 'Instrumental Methods of Food Analysis', 'Food Chemistry', and any other lab-based courses that involve the use of analytical equipment as it relates to food analysis. This employee is critical to ensure the proper training and safety of university personnel working in food chemistry, analysis, and quality research. The individual will train and oversee personnel, including students, working with highly specialized analytical equipment such as (but not limited to) GC/ FID and /MS; HS- SPME -GC/ FID and /MS; (U) HPLC /UV-Vis, / PDA , /RI, / FLD , and /MS; spectrophotometry; and spectrofluometry, as well as to ensure compliance with safety programs developed by the university and PIs, oversee certification of the lab equipment used for conducting food chemistry, analysis, and quality research. The individual will maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity in ensuring compliance policies in the execution of experiments in food chemistry, analysis, and quality labs. This employee is responsible for the proper maintenance of analytical instrumentation employed in food analysis and food chemistry to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). The individual in this position will also diagnose and troubleshoot problems with analytical equipment associated with the food chemistry, analysis, and quality labs.

• Conduct specialized and complex assays and instrument analyses.
• Interpret, compile, and organize experimental data.
• Prepare reports or correspondence relative to lab projects.
• Perform regular maintenance and calibrations of lab instrumentation and equipment; repair or schedule repairs as needed.
• Write and manage lab SOPs. For example, run high-performance liquid chromatographic ( HPLC ) analyses with UV-Vis, fluorescence, and refractive index detectors.
• Develop strategies with the new HPLC fraction collector in Dr. Pegg's lab to isolate pure compounds.
• Some samples are taken over for HPLC -MS (mass spectrometric) analyses, and then interpret the MS data recorded.
• Furthermore, run gas chromatographic analyses using GC- FID and GC-MS detection systems, as well as volatile flavor compound research by HS- SPME -GC/- FID or -MS.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Advise students and visitors on their research and instruct proper usage of in-laboratory and core facility instrumentation.
• Assist with literature searches and proofread analytical procedures/papers/dissertations/thesis to assure their accuracy. (Examples of equipment handled by this position include HPLC (2-3), GLC (2), GC-MS, FTIR , DSC , Nano-size particle analyzer, ultracentrifuge, type 2 water system, and preparatory sample for other analyses.)
• This position plays an important supervisory role for both undergraduate and graduate students in our department by performing chemical and separation analyses. For example, this position helps students load Sephadex LH-20 columns and run phenolic separations using a fraction collector. Then leads the students analyze their UV-Vis spectra to pool fractions and then run further analyses by HPLC .

• Manage purchase of chemical supplies and inventory records of all labs and certificates of analysis ( COA ).
• For faculty and graduate students, lead the ordering of chemical supplies from vendors such as Fisher Scientific, VWR (Avantor), Millipore-Sigma, and Thomas Scientific.

• Leads the scheduling of the annual safety training for all lab personnel.
• Maintain safety certification records for annual safety inspections.
• Supervises lab personnel on proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials, and maintain hazardous waste manifests.
• Prepare/submit waste pickup forms through Chematix.
• Supervises all of the graduate students in the proper use of the departmental ultracentrifuge with its various rotors.
