ARS Office/Lab and Location : A postdoctoral research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), at the US National Poultry Research Center within the Quality & Safety Assessment Research Unit (QSARU) located in Athens, Georgia.
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.
The overall mission of QSARU is to develop strategies and technologies to improve the quality and safety attributes of various agricultural commodities including poultry meat and eggs, nuts, grain, seed, and feed. This is accomplished through research to: 1) determine the physical, chemical, and biological properties that influence quality and safety, 2) develop novel technologies to measure quality and safety, and 3) develop postharvest methods to improve quality and safety.
Research Project : This postdoctoral fellowship will focus on conducting research in the area of poultry processing. The fellow will collaborate with a diverse team of food technologists and engineers to determine how poultry processing systems influence product quality and safety characteristics. The goal of the research will be to develop strategies, methods, and technologies to improve the sustainability and efficiency of poultry processing while enhancing final product safety and quality. Research will focus on poultry processing steps from initial bird stunning and slaughter through carcass chilling and deboning. Both conventional and alternative poultry processing systems will be evaluated. The fellow will have the opportunity to conduct research in both pilot and commercial poultry processing facilities as well as muscle biology and microbiology laboratories. The research project will cover areas of meat science, food safety, engineering, and sensor development. The fellow will be involved in all aspects of the research from conception and experimental design through planning and conducting the research trials. The fellow will also be involved in data analysis and reporting research results through presentations at scientific and stakeholder meetings and in writing peer-reviewed scientific papers.
Learning Objectives : As a result of this training opportunity, the participant will improve their skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, poultry processing, food safety, muscle biology, and meat science.
Mentor(s) : The mentors(s) for this opportunity is Brian Bowker (brian.bowker@usda.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor(s).
Anticipated Appointment Start Date : 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length : The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
