Job Summary Responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and design assistance of irrigation systems at city facilities, parks, athletic fields and landscape medians.
Essential Functions 1. Maintains, repairs, and installs irrigation systems on city property.
2. Assists in the design of irrigation systems or studies design plans to determine layout and location of proposed irrigation heads, pipe locations/size and verifies design plans with topography to ensure consistency of blueprints with actual requirement of the locations.
3. Installs irrigation systems by assembling pipes, valves, timing devices, program controllers and other related hardware to complete new irrigation systems or modify existing systems to correct water deficiencies.
4. Performs inspections to determine if systems meet state and municipal codes, makes repairs such as replacing damaged parts and accesses preventive maintenance status of irrigation systems.
5. Operates a variety of equipment such as trenchers, backhoes and front-end loaders to facilitate the installation or modification to irrigation systems.
6. Communicates with other departments, vendors, contractors, utility companies and citizens to insure coordinated activities.
7. Works with assigned staff in job tasks to insure proper work and safety procedures are followed.
8. Diagnoses and solves complicated irrigation repairs independently.
9. Ensures all irrigation repairs and installations meet with local and state safety guidelines.
10. Ensures that irrigation contractor’s and employee’s work is completed in compliance with contract specifications and/or city standards and on a timely basis.
11. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
12. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
13. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
Required Skills SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Must be able to read and understand reference books and complicated procedure manuals such as wiring schematics and controllers and irrigation heads.
• Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints; perform basic arithmetic to calculate linear feet of pipe, pipe diameter, water velocity, and friction loss.
• Must know how to read ohmmeter to check continuity of valves, solenoids and controllers.
• Must be able to work independently, solve problems, and prioritize work.
• Must be comfortable working outside comfort zone with a willingness to learn.
• Must be a team player who is able to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.
• Ability to maintain cooperative-working relationships with employees and those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have a minimum of three years of experience on irrigation systems or a minimum of three years of experience working with PVC pipe and fittings up to six inches.
Must possess a current TCEQ Landscape Irrigator license or have the ability to obtain within six months of hire or promotion.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1).
