The Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia has an opening for an experienced Lab Specialist (varying levels) to work on addiction studies in Dr. Wendy Lynch’s laboratory. The Lynch Lab uses behavioral, pharmacological, and molecular techniques to delineate the neurobiological basis of addiction, with particular interest in determining the biological basis of sex differences in vulnerability to addiction.JOB RESPONSIBILITIESPerform experiments which utilize rat models of addiction.Support the goals of the lab under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.Responsible for maintaining the animal protocol, ensuring compliance from all animal handlers, and conducting laboratory inspections.Responsible for interviewing, training, and managing undergraduate student research assistants, overseeing animal care, husbandry, and surgical procedures.Works under supervision, independently and ethically, documents all research data appropriately, and assists other members of the lab.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSLab SpecialistEducation: Bachelor's degree.Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.Lab Specialist IntermediateEducation: Bachelor's degree.Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.Lab Specialist SeniorEducation: Bachelor's degree.Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience in at least two of these areas is preferred: addiction research, behavioral research, neuropharmacology, surgery, Western blotting/qPCR/RNA-sequencing, and bioinformatics.Excellent organizational and communication skillsProficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and ExcelPHYSICAL DEMANDSThis position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.  This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
