The duties and responsibilities of a Certified Sleep Technologist may include:
Preparing patients for sleep studies, which may include explaining the testing procedures, attaching electrodes and sensors to the patient's body, and monitoring the patient throughout the study.
Conducting sleep studies on patients, which may include monitoring their brain waves, breathing, heart rate, and other physiological responses during sleep.
Analyzing sleep study results and preparing reports for physicians and other healthcare providers.
Collaborating with physicians and other healthcare providers to develop treatment plans for patients with sleep disorders.
Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of patient care and sleep study results.
Troubleshooting technical issues with sleep monitoring equipment and ensuring that equipment is properly calibrated and functioning.
Educating patients and their families about sleep disorders and treatment options.
Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients during sleep studies.
Certified Sleep Technologists typically hold an associate's or bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field, such as respiratory therapy or polysomnographic technology. They also hold certification from a professional organization, such as the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). Sleep Techs may work in sleep labs, hospitals, or clinics, and may work evening or overnight shifts to conduct sleep studies on patients during their normal sleep hours.
