Description Under the direct supervision of the Communications and Engagement Director, this Communications and Engagement Intern position offers a unique opportunity to participate in current, real-life public communication situations, while developing research, technical and communication skills and learning about municipal government and public relations practices.
Duties / Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
• Assists with drafting and editing news releases, newsletters, marketing and website content for publication.
• Assists in the development of engaging and informative graphics for social media and other communication materials.
• Assists with taking pictures and/or videos of assigned locations and at community events for use on social media, print and online communications.
• Attends public meetings or public engagement events (i.e. City Council, neighborhood meetings).
• Commitment to using an equity mindset to facilitate learning opportunities and success for all community members; and engages with, invests in, and develops relationships with diverse communities and organizations that support the development and advancement of equity and inclusion.
• Performs physical demands and work environment requirements for this position.
• Attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
• Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and residents both verbally and in writing.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
• Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent.
Qualifications / Conditions of Employment MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be enrolled full-time at an accredited university, working toward a degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Media Studies, or a closely-related field.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota
• Must lead by example on organizational and departmental policies.
• Must successfully complete a background examination.
• Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
• Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to public data. Any access to non-public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statues.
Hours of Work Regular working hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and outside of regular hours as necessary. This position will be 10 hours per week.
