Job Description
The nurse extern will perform skills that are routinely a part of any state tested nurse assistant's job. Nurse externs will also perform additional skills and tasks that have been taught in their academic accredited nursing education program. Nurse extern applications must provide documentation of successful completion of academic course work and demonstrated clinical competency to perform the tasks. Job function performance is incumbent upon the nurse extern successfully completing/learning a particular skill in his/her accredited program of nursing. The nurse extern provides nursing assistance under the continuous, direct, on-site supervision of a registered nurse. Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides for personal care, comfort and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for an assigned group of patients.
Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Duties
Nurse Extern Responsibilities
Required:
Employee must successfully complete an orientation process that identifies skills needed to practice in their position and in their job assignment. Skill requirements must be met and maintained to ensure employee competency. This is achieved through an annual review of those particular skills and a work improvement plan for any non-compliant area.
A. Provides general patient care such as bathing, mouth care and peri-care, dressing of patients, and changing/making beds. Responsible for positioning patients, lifting and turning, applying/utilizing assistive devices and special equipment (e.g. walkers, canes, knee immobilizer, back splints), special equipment, and assisting with bowel and bladder functions and ambulating patients.
B. Prepares and assists patients with meals, feeds patients, removes dietary trays and records accurate intake and output. Documents amount and percent of meals and fluids according to Intake and Output and Calorie Count procedures.
C. Provides spot check pulse oximetry, discontinuation saline lock, colostomy care and changing of appliance (greater than 30 days old), insertion/irrigation, removal of nasogastric tubes, provides continuous and bolus enteral feedings, sterile dressing changes, suture/staples removal, and insertion/removal of intermittent and indwelling catheters.
D. Demonstrates the ability to perform patient care procedures identified in the nurse extern checklist and charts care provided. Demonstrates knowledge of location of skills/procedures in Mosby's Skills and regulatory requirements.
E. Schedules and rounds 8-hours with wound care nurse.
F. Responsible for having tested skills observed and documented by three nurses in the clinical setting and submitting competency checklist to nurse manager for placement in employee permanent file.

A. Demonstrates ability to follow directions, both oral and written and work cooperatively with other staff members.
B. Responsible for own personal growth and development as it relates to job duties and performance.
C. Attends education programs, as assigned to maintain knowledge of treatments, procedures, and clinical skills. Attends mandatory in-service days.
Quality/Customer Service
A. Respects the ethnic origin, spiritual beliefs and privacy/confidentiality of those served.
B. Participates in departmental meetings as well as other committees assigned.
C. Performs other duties as assigned.
Financial
Uses resources of SEH in a respectful and cost effective manner
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
Student nurses who are currently enrolled in a pre-licensure nursing program and will be
entering their last year of a 4 year program and last term of a 2 year program. The faculty of the program must provide documentation and an evaluation of the student's skill performance and a faculty member recommendation.
Specialized Knowledge:
Has been given satisfactory grade for specified nursing skills in their nursing program and can satisfactorily demonstrate these skills upon acceptance into the nurse extern program
