Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportationâs (VDOTâs) Bristol District is seeking an individual interested in joining our team for the Russell/Buchanan Bridge Crew!
Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:
Equipment Operation
â Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Preventative Maintenance
â Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools. Transport personnel, equipment and materials to and from various work sites. Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
Manual Labor
â Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in accomplishing construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
Construction Operations
â Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry,welding and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
Environmental Protection
â Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
Job Safety
Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Emergency Operations
Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
Skill in the use of carpentry tools, concrete forming and finishing methods, fabricating steel components and welding.
Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment (e.g. dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, track-hoe, etc.), as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, work at heights, in moving traffic, over and in water and under other adverse conditions.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
Ability to work well individually and as a team member.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to obtain certifications in work zone safety, flagging, chainsaw safety, First Aid and
CPR.
Valid driverâs license and ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in bridge maintenance and construction.
Experience in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
Experience in operating an excavator, track hoe with bucket or hoe-ram in constricted areas of work sites.
Possession of valid CDL and DOT medical card.

Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, animals and insects.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Must obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment physical, drug screen, references, and work history will be required prior to employment.
Valid driverâs license and safety shoes required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
