Job Summary
The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking qualified and enthusiastic individuals to join our Forensic Services within the Direct Care and Treatment (DCT) division of agency.
The Forensics Services campus in St. Peter is comprised of the Forensic Mental Health Program and the Forensic Nursing Home. Forensics Services provides mental health evaluation and treatment services to individuals diagnosed with a mental illness who present a risk to public safety. This is a safe and secure treatment environment.
The Forensic Mental Health Program in St. Peter has an exciting opportunity as a Safety Officer. The Safety Officer will work closely with the Safety Administrator in planning, directing, implementing, coordinating, evaluating, and monitoring the fire, occupational safety and health, and risk management programs.
The Safety Officer serves as a leadership member of the Safety Committee and participates across the Forensics enterprise. The Safety Officer conducts periodic safety audits to ensure safety procedures are being followed, reports on safety initiatives and staff safety metrics, and develops corrective safety measures.
Primary responsibilities include:
• Assure safety programs are following all applicable federal and state standards and codes
• Develop safety procedures and plans
• Identify risks and techniques to reduce injuries and illnesses
• Provide hands-on training and support to staff to enhance their knowledge on identifying and understanding safety risks and how such can be prevented or reduced.

• Trainings will be based on unique specific skill sets and in accordance with the specific needs of the client program
• Assist in the development and planning of emergency and disaster readiness
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or a highly related field
OR
• 1 year professional experience in a residential environment or large healthcare setting
OR
• 2 years advanced technical or paraprofessional in a residential environment or large healthcare setting
Experience must demonstrate the following:
• Identifying occupational safety and health problems and develop ways to support and implement solutions.
• Mentoring, guiding, or leading employees with Incident Command Systems, safety interventions, or other emergency response systems
• Assisting in the implementation of safety and security policies
• Knowledge of industrial hygiene and ways to protect from hazards at work that may result in injury, illness, or affect the well-being of co-workers
• Basic knowledge of Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Acts (OSHA)
