Description
The City of Roanoke is seeking a Plumber to serve in the Department of General Services. This role will repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and install commercial plumbing systems including HVAC piping systems, rainwater recovery, swimming pool and decorative fountain maintenance. May be required to operate backhoe/skid steer, training will be provided if needed. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) one to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements. Will be provided Will be provided 18 months to obtain a Virginia State journeyman certification in the trade area assigned (electrical or plumbing).
Examples of Duties SUMMARY
Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include the following depending on area of assignment
Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor, foreman or facilities trades professional
Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions
Makes and adjusts work assignments
Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists
Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
Adheres to established safety procedures
Requisitions parts and materials used in the repair of equipment or jobs assigned
Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensure truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e. water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares, etc.)
Performs at minimum journey-level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding
Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law
Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices
Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment
Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards
Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements
Follows established safety procedures
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
Must be able to climb/work on ladders and/ or lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
Pulmonary test will be provided by the City
Will be required to operate out of a bucket truck, training will be provided if needed
Other duties may be assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise crew in the absence of supervisor, foreman or lead

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) one to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Have ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
Require basic math skills and mechanical aptitude
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements. HVAC Division Will be provided Will be provided 18 months to obtain a universal EPA refrigerant certification and journeyman certification. Mechanical Division Will be provided Will be provided 18 months to obtain a Virginia State journeyman certification in the trade area assigned (electrical or plumbing). Structural Division (Locksmith) Will be provided Will be provided 18 months to obtain a jail lock service & repair certification (training will be provided). Welding Division (Welder) Will be provided ample time and support to obtain a welding/rigging certification.
