Job Description
The Center for Vascular and Heart Research at the Fralin Biomedical Research Center (FBRI) at Virginia Tech invites applications from qualified individuals for a full-time position as a histology technician with expertise in preparing biological samples for electron microscopy and super-resolution immunofluorescent imaging. Duties include and responsibilities will include:
• Consulting with and providing guidance to clients on optimal sample collection and fixation procedures
• Processing and sectioning samples for histology preparations
• Processing and sectioning samples for transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM) and super-resolution imaging (SoRa and STORM)
• Management of the FBRI Histology histology core equipment and bookings
• Working with the microscopy director to ensure optimal maintenance and operation of the transmission and scanning electron microscopes as well as auxiliary laboratory equipment
• Coordinating sample billing and laboratory rates with the FBRI histology core
• Some additional duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree in biology, histology, or other related fields or BS with equivalent level of training and related experience; Prior experience and/or training in electron microscopy (TEM and SEM); Previous experience in general laboratory operations; Knowledge and skill in producing digital electron photomicrographs; Competence in basic computer use including text editing and spreadsheets; Ability to communicate and interact effectively and independently with faculty, staff and students.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification by the Microscopy Society of America.
