The Botetourt County Sports Complex is currently accepting applications to fill the position of Sports Field Technician. The Sports Field Technician works under the supervision of the Turf Manager to maintain and operate Tier 1 sports fields.  Specialized knowledge of turf characteristics and maintenance is required, as is familiarity with sports field marking requirements and standards.
We are looking for someone with experience in the following areas: • Maintenance, repair and preparation of sports fields
• Mowing, aerating, fertilizing, topdressing, seeding, pesticide application and irrigation maintenance
• Record keeping of field maintenance
• Care and routine maintenance of tools and equipment
The successful applicant must be experienced in the following areas: • Minimum of 2 years of experience maintaining sports fields, painting and field layout and equipment associated with park and sports field maintenance
• General knowledge of fertilizers, nutrient supplements, pesticides, and herbicides
• Warm and cool season grass and the ability to differentiate the two
• Demonstrated knowledge of practical turf characteristics and management
• Basic knowledge of equipment and maintenance

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions • Do the right thing.
• Promote the vision, mission and values of the Board of Supervisors and County Government Organization.
• Maintains, repairs and prepares sports fields and related facilities; work includes mowing, aerification, fertilization, topdressing, seeding, irrigation maintenance, application of pesticides and general problem solving of damage on the fields, field marking and preparation, general field and facility clean-up, maintenance and preparation.
• Responsible for record keeping of field maintenance (seeding, fertilizing, aerating), field evaluation (field prep and lining), pesticide usage (chemicals used, how much used, where applied and weather conditions), service maintenance records for vehicles, trailers, mowers and other equipment (track shop visits, state inspections, oil changes, filter changes, etc.).
• Responsible for the care and routine maintenance of tools and equipment to include proper calibration, if applicable.
• Assists with snow removal, as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
• 2 years of experience maintaining sports fields, painting and field layout, infield skin, base anchor and pitching rubber placement, operating equipment associated with park and sports field maintenance. Examples include tractor, various mowers (zero turn, reel, push, and walk behind) aerator, ventrac, truck and trailer, roller.
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the requirements above may be accepted.
• Intermediate knowledge of agronomy and environmental turfgrass management practices including pest/disease/weed management; knowledge of cool and warm season turf; a working knowledge of sports field construction principles, practices and methods; and through understanding of the sports governing bodies’ requirements for field layout and marking.
• Demonstrated knowledge of practical turf characteristics and management, including irrigation, fertilization, and pest and disease management.
• Experience managing turf within the Transition Zone strongly preferred.
• General knowledge of fertilizers, nutrient supplements, pesticides, and herbicides.
• Familiarity with irrigation operation, layout, and repair.
• Experience with warm and cool season grass and the ability to differentiate the two.
• Proficiency using a computer and electronic applications for communication, work order management, and record keeping.
• Must be able to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and meet deadlines.
• General math and computation skills required to calculate measurements, ratios, differences, etc.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the general public.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment physical that includes alcohol/drug screening and on-going random screenings.
• Basic knowledge of equipment and maintenance, ability to trouble shoot minor problems such as belts, filters, battery, spark plugs.
• Must possess a valid drivers license and maintain a good driving record.
• Possess Pesticide Applicators License or obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to lead and supervise temporary and community service workers.
Physical Demands/Special Work Environment • The person in this position frequently moves equipment, tools, maintenance items, trash and yard waste weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently operates, positions, and inspects machinery and tools for use in maintenance tasks.
• The person in this position frequently is required to traverse across uneven grounds; sports fields; indoor arenas; small spaces such as bathroom stalls and concession stands; and wet, snow or ice covered walkways.
• The person in this position frequently communicates and exchanges information with colleagues and subordinates who need detailed instructions on work assignments. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Occasionally ascends/descends ladder to provide maintenance.
• Constantly positions oneself low to ground or on ground to provide maintenance to irrigation, equipment, and clay infield surfaces on fields.
• Requires accurate use and precise perception and judgement for: safe use of measuring devices; operation of machinery and equipment; operation of motor vehicles; and  the general observation of surroundings and activities for the safety of individuals, staff and the general public.
• Constantly works in outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards and atmospheric conditions.
