Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Civilian Background Investigator who is a civilian, non-sworn employee responsible for conducting investigations into the personal and professional backgrounds of civilian applicants within the department, The City of Roanoke E-911 Center, applicants to Conservators of the Peace, concealed weapons permit petitioners, conduct polygraph examinations if credentialed and any other backgrounds assigned by the Academy Director or Chief of Police. The Civilian Background Investigator makes recommendations regarding these applicants based on investigation findings.
Examples of Duties Conduct thorough background investigations
Conduct interviews with applicants and references provided in submitted applications
Remain knowledgeable on current CALEA Law Enforcement, Academy and Dispatchstandards regarding hiring practices

Education and/or Experience :
High School diploma or general education degree (GED) college education preferred. Prior knowledge and experience conducting investigations.
A valid Virginia Polygraph License is preferred.
Supplemental Information Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routing reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Reasoning ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
