How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:
Surgical 1st Assist Lead position covering the Department of Orthopaedics within the ambulatory and inpatient settings to include Roanoke, CNRV, and regional sites as needed.   Will collaborate with physician leadership and physician governance.   Working directly with Senior Director.  Role will be 75% clinical (OR/Clinical) and 25% administrative.  Responsibilities to include; payroll, orientation planning, participates in performance reviews,  improvement discussions/follow-ups,  and staff development.  Will lead the ACP governance council to include facilitating meetings and project management.  Assists with ACP departmental projects to potentially include ACP fellowship program.
Through collaboration with the Orthopaedic Administrative team and physician champions, the Orthopaedic ACP Team Leader promotes a productive, quality-focused and fiscally responsible work team through effective leadership and problem-solving skills. He/she performs all functions of the Orthopaedic Surgical ACP, assuming responsibility for determining the patient’s health and medical status by taking a health history, performing physical exams, initiating screening and diagnostic procedures, providing health maintenance services, and managing acute and chronic illness. The Surgical ACP Team Leader functions in a fast track/acute care setting with a schedule that includes provision of clinical services during day, night, weekend and holiday hours.
• Provides quality service in a caring and professional manner. Actively commits to team efforts, cost effectiveness, service excellence and respect for by demonstrating actions which support Carilion Clinic.
• Conducts comprehensive health histories. Performs physical, psychological, and developmental assessments using appropriate techniques based on age.
• Discriminates between normal and abnormal physical, psychological, and developmental findings, and appropriately determines when to consult with and/or refer to other members of the health care team. Initiates, implements, and prescribes appropriate treatment plans, consulting with the physician as needed.
• Accurately records changes in health status and assessment findings, documenting actions in a clear and concise manner.
• Provides patient/family education, develops plans for continued health care management, and promotes health maintenance activities for patients.
• Acts as a resource to patients, other health team members, the community, and various academic institutions.
• Promotes achievement of fast track/acute service area goals/objectives and regulatory compliance.
• Role models effective communication and collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the health care team.
• Assists Director in the performance management process by promoting individual employee accountability, conducting developmental coaching, participating in developmental planning, and providing input into the annual performance appraisal process.
• Assists in interview process for ACPs, providing insight into skill base and team fit of applicants.
• Assures development of an effective work schedule. Coordinates the self-scheduling process.
• Provides input into the planning and budget process.  Assures appropriate resource allocation and maintains staffing levels in accordance with financial targets.
• Provides support and oversight of the Orthopaedics ACP Fellowship Program.
What We Require:
Education: Graduate of an Accredited Physician Assistant Program (PA) or Accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program (NP).
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years clinical experience preferred. First Assist experience preferred. Additional experience may be required for some specialties.
Licensure/Certification: Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant State License, NCCPA, and DEA required. AHA BLS-HCP, ACLS, and ATLS required.
Other: Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine. Meets credentialing requirements. Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication, problem-solving, negotiation and interpersonal skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems and programs such as electronic medical records. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic’s malpractice insurance carrier.
