Job Duties
The Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) Physician provides high quality individualized medical care and basic psychiatric care to SWVMHI patients, in conjunction with the facility staff. The MOD serves as a medical resource to the Institute during non-regular weekday hours. Hours, if working M-F are 5:00 pm - 8:00 am, and on weekends and holidays.
Requires comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in the diagnoses and treatment of general medical illnesses; basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry; ability to provide leadership to treatment teams; ability to communicate effectively with, and work collaboratively with, medical/psychiatric colleagues and members of other disciplines in the provision of patient care. Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to demonstrate satisfactory training, skill, expertise, and knowledge in the treatment of psychiatric patients.
• Completion of an approved residency program in Psychiatry.
• ACLS is required.
• A current DEA certificate is required.
• Licensed to practice medicine and surgery in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in the diagnoses and treatment of general medical illnesses
• Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry
• Ability to provide leadership to treatment teams
• Ability to communicate effectively with, and work collaboratively with medical/psychiatric colleagues and members of other disciplines in the provision of patient care.
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Work experience with inpatient psychiatric populations is preferred.
• Certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is preferred, but not required.

This position is hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
