The Thomas Jefferson Foundation seeks a supervisor to assist with the management of the team that maintains the grounds, trees, and landscape features of Monticello. The Grounds supervisor position is a hands on position that will lead the Grounds staff in tree removals, operation of power equipment, and ensure and tasks are completed as assigned.
Duties include:
• Determine work schedule for the week to include routine maintenance and preparation for upcoming special events.
• Provide day to day direction for other groundkeepers or seasonal help.
• Operates power equipment to maintain grounds to a high horticultural standard: mows and edges lawns; weed-eats banks; vacuums leaves; plows snow; blows gutters, sprays weeds; prunes hedges; chain-saws trees; chips brush; fertilizes trees and lawns; aerates lawn; loads trucks with front-end loader; and clears and weed-eats overgrown woodlands.
• Manually maintains grounds to a high standard: rakes leaves, plants, mulches, and waters young trees and other landscape plants; cleans the fish pond; sweeps walkways; empties trash barrels; applies mulch as needed; re-surfaces gravel walkways; repairs fences; picks up litter; shovels snow; picks up fallen limbs; cleans and packages seed for sale; re-seeds lawns; lays sod; and prunes shrubbery.
• Performs basic maintenance procedures on equipment, such as sharpening blades, and cleaning hand tools, and to notify fleet maintenance of any other repairs and upkeep that is necessary.
• Monitors debris, litter, trash, unsafe walkways for specific areas during morning clean up.
This person will also work with contractors to complete work as needed. This position requires expert level knowledge of safe use, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and engines, expert-level knowledge of common grounds maintenance techniques as well as arboriculture and plant taxonomy knowledge, and the ability to supervise employees. The candidate must be able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time during all types of weather, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
A Virginia Pesticide Applicator's license is required or must be obtained within six months of hire. This position is considered essential and will require work outside regular business hours due to inclement weather and special events. Position open until filled.
