ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY COUNSEL/ ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA
The attorney, based on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Health Services Section and the University Counsel, and will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to the University. The University of Virginia is comprised of eleven schools in Charlottesville, an academic medical center, plus the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia. DUTIES: It is anticipated that this attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving the Health System at the University, including its Medical Center (MC), Clinics, School of Medicine, Health Sciences Library, School of Nursing, and subsidiaries in coordination with the other attorneys in the Office of the University Counsel. Areas of emphasis may include credentialing and privileging of physicians and Advance Practice Providers through provision of legal support to the MC Clinical Staff Office and MC Credentials Committee, including oversight of peer review matters and investigations; assisting MC risk management on ongoing and acute statutory analysis; supporting the Office of Graduate Medical Education and Ethics Committee; reviewing and providing legal advice on the application of MC policies; negotiating contracts on behalf of MC pharmacies, laboratories, Population Health and all MC patient care initiatives; oversight of risk assessment and legal issues related to the MC Office of Privacy and Compliance, responding to and filing Department of Health Professions reports; EMTALA application and involuntary commitment matters; coordination with UVA Community Health and other MC-owned health entities; and, more generally supporting all legal aspects of patient care functions. This attorney will be required to provide legal advice concerning contracts, health care regulations and statutory compliance at both a state and federal level. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the University Counsel and the Office of the Attorney General.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion. A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation of health care providers or higher education institutions. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for immediate admission. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
