Job Description
Primary Purpose:
Oversees safety of operations and training and qualification of locomotive engineers on assigned territory.
Principal Duties:
• Rides with engineers on trains and provides instruction in proper train handling and locomotive operation based on terrain, power, tonnage, and train make-up.
• Conducts safety audits, rules checks, and participates in the disciplinary process where such corrective action is appropriate.
• Requires having an engineer's background for practical experience and technical training pertaining to the various types of engine air brakes, air signal systems, dynamic brakes, electrical, and fuel systems.
• Requires knowledge of all the topographical characteristics of the territory over which trains are operated, characteristics of all main, industrial, and yard tracks, and locations to include curves, grades, signals, signs, grade and road crossings, bridges, and other obstacles which affect train operations.
• Requires a general knowledge of FRA Regulations governing engines and equipment and a detailed knowledge of air brake tests and of safety appliances.
