Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.
Organizational Objective:
P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution. P&HCC aims to provide administrative, educational, and supportive services to the Academic Success and College Transfer Division that administers liberal arts, education, human services, and business transfer programs as well as occupational programs within the same curricular areas. This position provides assistance to the Dean of ASCT, full-time and part-time faculty, and students enrolled in programs or courses within the purview of the division, as well as delivering broader student support.
Position Summary:
Do you have passion for youth development? MHC After 3 seeks talented, dynamic, and diverse candidates for part-time Youth Mentor positions for middle and high school after-school programs. Through our unique after-school learning programs, MHC After 3 provides our youth with trusting support environments that are safe, healthy, and conductive to student learning while providing program participants with a variety of interactive and engaging experiences to enrich their lives with additional educational learning opportunities that contribute positively to youth development during afterschool hours and out of school time. Ideal candidates will be passionate for the job with an ability to reach out to students and create a relationship of mutual trust. They will be a fun, positive, and motivating person in the lives of participants enrolled in the program.
Duties:
Youth Mentors work closely with afterschool directors, instructors, and families to support high-quality program activities. Youth Mentors are responsible for guiding youth through structured academic and enrichment programming; actively engage and educate participants and support family members in helping students be successful in their academic, social, and personal endeavors.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Desirable candidates should beenergetic,outgoing, and have a genuine appreciation of working with students in an educational environment; have the ability to be a self-starter and work successfully with little supervision; the ability to communicate effectively; and the ability to effectively create a safe, positive learning environment that motivates youth to grow and succeed; get to know each youth, provide encouragement, and serve as a positive role model. Mentoring “expertise” is not required, but willingness to learn is. The successful candidate will also demonstrate effective problem-solving skills, patience and flexibility.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in teaching or public speaking
experience working with youth of various ages in a afterschool or camp setting
working towards a degree with coursework in education OR equivalent experience.
Previous experience delivering educational programs in informal and/or formal settings preferred.
