About the College/Unit/Department
The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System ( UNOLS ) fleet.

Position Summary
This incumbent will be the chemical and lab safety officer for the 12 faculty labs we have at the Institute. Due to the compliance and regulatory requirements of the Institute and the distance from main campus, where many of these services are centrally provided to the entire campus community, no other option exists at this time.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Have extensive working knowledge with laboratory safety and chemical safety.
• Understand proper chemical handling and disposal policies and procedures.
• Ability to work independently with hazardous materials.
• Ability to keep extensive documentation by federal and state law.
• Ability to work with various faculty and lab staff to ensure compliance with UGA safety requirements.

Assist faculty in performing annual chemical inventory.
Maintain inventory of any shared-use or central supply chemicals.
Coordinate and monitor annual mandatory trainings: lab safety, chemical safety (HR to assist).
Manage chemical waste disposal and storage.
Assist Dir of Finance & Operations in policy, procedure creation.

Monitor and maintain lab safety equipment, records, signage.
Verify annual certification of Institute radiation meter.
Assist in annual UGA lab safety inspection, work with administration to resolve findings/issues.

Inform Director of any issues, non-compliance, missing items.
