Position Summary

This position works as part of the Teen Services Team to oversee daily activities, engage after-school teens in projects and programs in the library’s Teen Area, and to plan and provide appealing, meaningful programming for teen-aged patrons. Library Assistants also perform front-line services to patrons of all ages, along with other routine, supportive duties. This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. The ability to start, finish or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. This position reports to the Teen Services Coordinator. Shifts are flexible, but afternoon, evening, and weekend hours are required.
Minimum Training and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or college experience preferred.
• Experience working or volunteering with teens required.
• One year experience working with the general public required; library experience preferred.
• A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.
• Create a welcoming and safe environment in the Teen Department; develop a positive relationship with teens who visit the library and encourage them to return.
• Help teens and patrons of all ages find library materials, access computers, participate in library programs, and find answers to basic questions.
• Work with other department staff to create and present age-appropriate, interesting, and educational programs for teens.
• Assist library patrons of all ages with computer activities, including catalog, database, internet searching, and printing.
• Support daily library operations by organizing and re-shelving materials, straightening book shelves and teen areas, creating signs and department decorations, and performing general office duties.
• Monitor behavior of teen patrons and uphold library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; Monitor and respond to safety and security concerns related to library patrons and property; and report situations according to outlined procedures.
• Independently manage and operate the Teen Department during night and weekend work assignments, including following established opening and closing procedures.
• Participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Skill in upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, and respectful and that supports the community and co-workers.
• Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages, and especially to teens.
• Knowledge of teen literature and media.
• Ability to organize and shelve library materials quickly and efficiently.
• Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office and library resources support, including ability to use computers, mobile devices, tablets, printers, scanners, copiers, and cash registers.
• Aptitude for creative projects such as displays, crafts, and decorations.
• Ability to keep up-to-date with popular culture and technological advances that interest teens.
• Ability to work independently within established guidelines, and as part of a team.
• Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons and staff.
• Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications.
• Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and activities.
• Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
• Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
