Description Part-Time Temporary Library Assistant
Performs clerical and customer service work in the public library system. Charges and discharges library materials, registers patrons, assists in controlling status of materials in circulation. Maintains files and records. Assists the public in the use of library facilities. Locates books, magazines and other materials as requested. Provides general library information. Examines shelves, replaces incorrectly shelved books. Work with staff on programs for adults and children. Prepares library materials for circulation. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. . Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Performs clerical work in the public library system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Charges and discharges library materials, registers patrons, assists in controlling status of materials in circulation
• Maintains files and records
• Assists the public in the use of library facilities
• Locates books, magazines and other materials as requested
• Provides general library information
• Examines shelves, replaces incorrectly shelved books
• Inspects and repairs library materials
• Processes and labels materials for circulation
• Orders and maintains inventory
• Prepares library materials for circulation, bindery and withdrawal from library collections
• Assists staff with Youth and Adult programs
• Duties as assigned such as security monitoring
• May require evening and weekend hours of work.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one to three months related experience and/or training in a clerical environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES and CERTIFICATIONS
Requires a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
REASONING ABILITY
