Career Area:Manufacturing & Supply ChainJob Description:Caterpillar is seeking a qualified manufacturing engineer to be part of their CNC machining team at their Athens, Ga facility.  This position has responsibility for creating and maintaining processes and programs related to the machining of large, welded structures.  A minimum of five years CNC experience is required for this position.The Building Construction Products facility in Athens, GA is seeking a process-driven, results-oriented Manufacturing Engineer to support their CNC machining operations.  The primary focus of this engineer will be developing and maintaining the processes, infrastructure, and programming necessary to successfully execute machining operations for Mini-Hydraulic Excavator (MHE’s) and Small Track-Type Tractor (STTT’s) fabrications.  It is necessary for the successful candidate to have a deep understanding of CNC tooling, machining, and CNC programming.  Machining operations for our structures are executed using large horizontal and gantry style machining centers with hydraulic workholding.  Our primary machining operations are (but not limited to) boring, reaming, drilling, tapping, and face milling.  Prior experience machining welded structures is also a desired skill.  This position will also have responsibility identifying and commissioning new equipment to be used in our machining operations.   Specifically in this role you can expect to:Perform technical analysis of manufacturing processes to support management decisionsDevelop capital forecast as it relates to new product introduction, product capacity increases, machine replacement, and process continuous improvementDevelopment of new CNC programs using a combination of EIA and CAM programmingWriting of in-process inspection routines using Renishaw machine tool probes and macrosDesign, build, deploy, and maintain all tooling and equipment necessary for the machining of MHE and STTT structuresDevelop, document, and maintain the processes necessary to meet product design requirement while ensuring operator safety and achievement of quality goalsValidate function and/or dimensions of tooling, machines, and parts for continued process conformanceDevelop and validate process cycle times by conducting time studiesMonitor process performance and quality by analyzing dimensional, OEE, process capability, and scrap/rework reports.Troubleshoot day-to-day process issues, develop solutions, and monitor improvementsRespond to customer issues and lead process improvementsCollaborate with the product engineering, operations, and quality groups to improve product quality and manufacturabilityPerform process improvement activities to reduce material and machining costReview NPI concepts, prints, and change notices for manufacturability; andProvide cross shift support as necessary to support productionTo be successful in this role, you must bring (Basic qualifications):BS Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology with some experience with CNCExperience with 3D CAD systems (Creo, Solidworks, or Inventor)Experience in creating, modifying, and troubleshooting EIA NC codeExperience in CAM software (preferably Esprit)Ability to work independently in Microsoft Office 365 applications.Top candidates will also bring:Experience with the machining of large, welded structures5 years of experience CNC machining experience (preferably in milling/boring/reaming applications) with low carbon steel (ASTM A36 equivalent)Ability to work some weekends and weekly overtime as neededThe ability to optimize machining processes through proper tool selection and setup.Experience in designing proper work holding solutions to ensure parts are secure during the machining processExperience integrating Renishaw probe routines into CNC programsExperience balancing process cycle times and tool cost through the optimization of speeds and feedsExperience collaborating with design engineering to ensure parts are designed for manufacturingExperience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)Ability to read and interpret engineering drawingsExperience creating and maintaining routings in ERP (SAP preferred) systemsRelocation assistance is not available for this positionISC is not available for this positionHow we support you (Employee benefits)Our goal at Caterpillar is for you to have a rewarding career including the potential to advance your career into operations leadership and other advanced manufacturing positions.
