Position Summary
This is responsible professional and managerial work in planning, directing, and coordinating the overall activities of an Agricultural Experiment Station animal/field research laboratory. Work involves coordinating with the station superintendent the planning, organizing, and directing the day to day administration and managerial functions of a large animal and field research laboratory and supervising and participating in projects requiring the implementation of complex research procedures. Work is reviewed principally through the observation of results and periodic conferences with administrative superiors. PCARD

• Knowledge and skill of animal health, genetics, forages, and nutrition.
• Knowledge and skill in the daily operations of a large beef cattle herd including feeds, feeding, breeding, calving, herd health, and conservation pasture management.
• Knowledge of crop plant pests, such as weeds, insects, and diseases as well as proper pesticide safety and usage.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials handling and disposal.
• Knowledge of soil fertility and testing.
• Knowledge of up-to-date crop management technology.
• Knowledge of plant and soil science research methods, techniques, and procedures.
• Knowledge of whole farm systems research.
• Skill in farm equipment, materials, and maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of microbiology.
• Knowledge of budget management.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with many independent research scientists, technicians, graduate students, and administrators, knowledge of row-crop farm, private pesticide applicators license.

• Work is carried out in inclement weather using large agricultural equipment and lifting over 100 pounds routinely.

Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
• This position has primary responsibility for the JPCREC beef cattle research herd.
• This herd consists of 200+ Angus and Angus X brood cows, yearling calves and multiple bulls.
• The herd is essentially a commercial cow-calf herd with retained yearling calves that are marketed each spring.
• The cattle herd's primary responsibility is to support the research and teaching missions of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
• The Senior Ag. Specialist is expected to manage all aspects of planning, management and animal husbandry related to this herd including but not limited to: planning the breeding season, managing our calving season, artificial insemination, timed-AI protocols, replacement heifer selection, sire selection, routine vaccinations, pregnancy checking, weaning, ration development and feeding of yearling steers and heifers, etc.
• In performing these tasks, the Senior Ag. Specialist is expected to work closely with the station superintendent, who has primary responsibility for the Research and Education Center, to ensure that the management of the cattle herd is aligned strategically with the center's mission.
• The Senior Ag. Specialist is expected to demonstrate a spirit of cooperation and service, and is expected display excellent communication skills when dealing with other REC staff members as well as when dealing with faculty/staff/students whose research and/or teaching projects the center is supporting.
• The Senior Ag. Specialist must be adept at keeping accurate and up to date records of the herd and be proficient in Excel, Word, email, etc.

Duties/Responsibilities
• This position is responsible for all aspects of pasture and hayfield management at the center; including but not limited to the production and making of dry hay and baleage, pasture and hayfield fertility, weed management in pastures and hayfields, developing and implementing grazing strategies in an effort to make the most efficient use of the available forage.
• In addition to these responsibilities, the Senior Ag. Specialist is responsible for the regular maintenance/repair, etc. of our system of interior and perimeter fences as they relate to the safety and security of our animals.

• The Senior Ag. Specialist will be expected to provide effective leadership to full-time staff, part-time staff and temporary student workers that are currently employed to assist him/her with their regular duties.
• When possible, the Senior Ag. Specialist will be expected to offer assistance to others in other areas of the farm when needed i.e. support row-crop operations during harvest, etc.
