JOB TITLE: Director of Alternative School
REPORTS TO : Director of Student Services
JOB GOAL : The Director of Alternative School is responsible for day-to-day operations, including supervision of students, monitoring and promoting a positive and safe school atmosphere, providing support for school staff in addressing student academic progress and behavior.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must hold valid Kentucky Teacher Certificate
• Professional Certificate for Instructional Leadership-Principal All Grades
• School level supervisory experience preferred.
• Classroom instruction, assessment practices, and professional interactions reflecting current research-based practices and a desire for continuous learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
• Assist with the enforcement of attendance laws and regulations and encourages regular and punctual attendance of students.
• Conducts home visits as needed.
• Meets regularly with the Alternative Placement Committee to discuss and place students in a beneficial educational setting.
• Ensures that personalized education plans and goals for each alternative school student are completed and carried out.
• Maintains regular contact with the Director of Student Services, Night School Coordinator, middle and high school guidance/administration, and all other District personnel.
• Completes necessary and required reports as requested by the Director of Student Services.
• Collaborates with the Director of Special Education on each student eligible for Special Education Services
• Communicates with all sending schools to ensure accurate records for each student
• Maintains regularly scheduled work hours at designated building.
• Coordinates with other district administrators to create a positive, safe, and caring learning environment.
• Develops and maintains an environment conducive to effectively learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
• Prepares for meetings and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
• Employs a variety of instructional leadership techniques to set and maintain a culture of high performing schools.
• Strives to implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Maintains complete and accurate records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
• Assists in upholding and enforcing district and school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policies.
• Makes provisions for being available to students and families for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms through appropriate parent -teacher conferences.
• Individually and cooperatively supervises students in and out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.
• Attends and participates in required meetings and serves on assigned committees.
• Accepts responsibility for co-curricular activities.
• Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with colleagues, subordinates, students, parents, and community members concerning both the broad academic and behavioral goals of the district, school, and students.
• Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
• Provides for own professional growth in accordance with state and federal regulations.
• Represents the school in the community effectively and in a positive manner.
• Meets the Standards and Indicators set forth in the Certified Personnel Evaluation Plan.
• Abides by the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky Certified School Personnel.
• Adheres to the requirements of the employee handbook, Owensboro Board of Education policies, and all applicable laws and regulations.
• Performs all other functions deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor that are reasonable and covered by local board policy or law.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
• Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Owensboro Board of Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
• Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
• Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Owensboro Public Schools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor, environmentally controlled.  Typical office environment including but not limited to telephones, personal interruptions, background noises.  May require working with or near the public, parents, and children and will be subject to sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors.  This position will require dealing with conflict and requires use of sound judgment.
