Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
AbbVie’s Biopharmaceutics team, within the Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery (MPDD) function, is seeking an intern to assist in the development and applications of Physiologically based biopharmaceutics models (PBBM). This work will support the selection and biopharmaceutic understanding of novel drug candidates. The intern will have the opportunity to build and utilize absorption models to support the selection of small molecule clinical candidates, solid form, and clinical formulation strategies for oral delivery. In this exciting opportunity the intern will be able to grow and pursue new opportunities with in silico and in vitro approaches to predict the performance of oral formulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Evaluate the use of in silico, in vitro, and in vivo pre-clinical data to build PBBM models that impact our biopharmaceutic understanding of drug candidates
Routinely use and develop advanced biopharmaceutics models and simulations, including gastrointestinal transit models in GastroPlus, Simcyp or Matlab
Apply biopharmaceutics, physical chemistry, and chemical engineering principles to guide candidate selection and the development of drug substance and drug product strategies
Demonstrate excellent communication skills and specifically illustrate strong oral and written technical communications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree, in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
Must be enrolled in university during the internship period
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Fundamental understanding of physicochemical properties as related to formulation design
Working knowledge of physiological barriers to drug absorption, including various potential transport mechanisms
Experience in the development of in vitro approaches towards understanding in vivo performance
Experience with analytical approaches toward physicochemical characterization of small-molecule candidates (i.e. HPLC, DSC, TGA, PXRD, drug release)
Working knowledge of typical formulation approaches and drug delivery strategies
Familiarity with PBBM/PBPK software platforms utilized for oral absorption modeling
BENEFITS AND AMENITIES
Competitive pay
Opportunity to connect with Abbvie leaders and scientists.
Exposure to state-of-the-art facilities and experts in drug product development
