PROCESS CHEMISTRY & ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie’s Experiential Interns.
Small Molecule Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control Development (CMC-SM) invents chemical processes and prepares active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to enable clinical trials, toxicology studies, and drug product development for AbbVie’s pre-clinical and clinical drug pipeline. In addition to working with small molecules, CMC-SM also develops antibody drug conjugates (ADC). Creating valuable intellectual property through the composition of matter, chemical processes, and technologies results in cost-effective commercial manufacturing processes. CMC-SM develops the supply chain for APIs and prepares and defends CMC regulatory content. Chemists and Chemical Engineers in AbbVie's R&D work in multi-functional teams to develop scalable processes and supply API for safety testing, clinical trials, and formulation development.
The intern will collaborate with the Process Chemistry and Engineering functions, within CMC-SM to develop robust processes to manufacture ADCs and small molecule APIs. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for chromatography and high throughput experimentation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Interface with Centers of Excellence and Subject Matter Experts to develop expertise in the operation of automated liquid handling and chromatography equipment
Establish a high throughput, parallel experimentation workflow to develop methods for preparative purification of ADCs using hydrophobic interaction (HIC) and ion-exchange (IEX) chromatography
Collaborate with Process Research & Development team to author a peer-reviewed publication for a demonstrated use case
