Job/Internship Description
Human Signatures - Intern
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist DNA Research Lead in performing laboratory tests using various automated platforms and/or manual methods (e.g., microarray and MPS) on DNA isolated from blood, saliva and other body fluids.
• Participates in research or validation studies of new DNA methodology as well as established methods and procedures.
• Adheres to proper handling and safeguarding of DNA samples and data.
• Follows established standard operating procedures, complies with laboratory policies, and reports nonconformance to supervisor.
• Perform analysis and interpretation of genotyping and sequencing results from diverse matrices.
• Performs established quality assurance procedures such as quality control testing, instrument function checks, preventative maintenance, and calibrations, maintains appropriate documentation, and reports irregularities.
• Conduct weekly decontamination of the forensic DNA laboratories to help minimize DNA contamination.
• Wash racks and other lab ware daily per protocol.
• Perform work wearing appropriate PPE for the activity being performed and maintain awareness of contamination control.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's):
• Enrolled in a Forensic accredited continuing education program
• Completion of coursework covering the subject areas of Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Population Genetics/Statistics.
• Basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis.
• Able to communicate effectively:
• Able to read, write, and communicate fluently in English;
• Able to read and comprehend short correspondence and memos and write short correspondence for both internal and external consumption;
• Possess sound reasoning skills and regularly show ability to follow detailed standard instructions, with great attention to detail and guidance from policy manuals and SOPs; and,
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.
Education/Experience:
• Current enrollment in a Forensic accredited continuing education program (Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral)
• Candidates with demonstrated experience as an individual contributor within a molecular biology, genetics, and/or biotechnology laboratory setting will be given preference.
Certificates and Licenses: None.
Citizenship: United States.
Clearance: Ability to obtain a DOD Clearance.
Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A.
Working Conditions/ Equipment:
• The incumbent will work in a general office environment with general office equipment available as well as a forensic DNA laboratory.
• The incumbent will have contact with known and potentially hazardous materials, including biological fluids and dry ice.
• The incumbent will be required to work a set schedule negotiated with the Supervisor.
• The incumbent must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance and 40 pounds with assistance to complete shipping activities.
