THE OPPORTUNITY The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks an accomplished and strategic professional with a leadership record to serve as the next  Associate Dean for Administration, Chief Administrative & Financial Officer (Associate Dean) The  Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce, Nicole Thorne Jenkins and is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of operational excellence, fiscal integrity, and stewardship of resources. As a key advisor to the Dean and an integral member of the School’s  leadership team, the  Chief Administrative Officer plays a central role in developing and executing the vision and plans for the School.The Associate Dean works extensively with the Executive Director of the McIntire School Foundation to continue strengthening the School's financial position. The  Associate DeanOfficer regularly interacts with McIntire faculty, staff, students, University administration, Trustees of the McIntire School Foundation, McIntire School Advisory Board members, and a wide variety of external stakeholders. The  Chief Administrative Officer also serves as a visible and proactive member of the University community and on various administrative, finance, and Foundation related committees.The  Associate Dean will join McIntire and the University of Virginia at a time of celebration, opportunity, and shared vision. 2021 marked the School’s Centennial. As McIntire begins its next century, the Commerce School has undertaken visionary plans for a new academic complex designed to foster student success and strengthen community connections. McIntire’s highly integrated programs offer unparalleled immersive learning opportunities with industry partners on Grounds in Charlottesville, at two facilities in Northern Virginia, and in cities across the globe.The Commerce School is home to a highly regarded undergraduate business program and five one-year graduate programs. The Economist ranks McIntire’s M.S. in Commerce as the #1 Master’s in management degree in the U.S (2021), Poets&Quants ranks the School’s B.S. in Commerce as #5 in the U.S. (2022), and QS World University Rankings called the Global 3 program the #2 multi-campus Master’s in management Program in the world.Today, McIntire has more than 200 faculty and staff with more than 800 students from 25 countries. There are currently 7 Centers of Excellence with new programs recently added, including a Biotechnology Track (M.S. in Commerce) and a Real-Estate minor. McIntire has an extensive global footprint that includes programs in more than 35 countries, 10 faculty-led global courses, and 17 international partner schools. Nearly 500 students study abroad in a typical year through  short-courses and  full-semester programs. McIntire has an alumni network of more than 21K undergraduate and graduate alumni representing 84 countries.McIntire Expansion ProjectIn December 2017, the UVA Board of Visitors approved a proposal for additional McIntire facilities and broke ground in September 2022. The expansion will be constructed on the southeast corner of UVA's historic Lawn at the northeast corner of Ruppel Drive and Jefferson Park Avenue. Expected to open in 2025, the Commerce Complex will include the entirely new Shumway Hall, McIntire’s current home of Rouss & Robertson Halls, a reimagined Cobb Hall, and a host of inviting outdoor gathering spaces. The larger Commerce complex will provide the University with student-focused flexible classrooms; a multi-purpose atrium that can hold more than 400 guests; state-of-the-art labs; a café; and a unique point of entry to the Lawn from the revitalized Brandon Avenue corridor.A $30 million gift from The Chris & Carrie Shumway Foundation is at the heart of the expansion project. Of the $30 million gift, most will go toward the innovative building, while $5 million will establish a professorship to study and teach at the intersection of biomedical science and business. The gift advances collaborative efforts between the McIntire School and the UVA School of Medicine to create educational offerings that integrate business concepts into biomedical science and healthcare leadership studies. The McIntire community envisions that the space will invite collaboration with schools and organizations across Grounds and create more shared learning and research opportunities across UVA. The expansion project is scheduled for completion by spring 2025.THE ROLEThe  Associate Dean is focused on aligning resources—financial, human, and operational—in support of the academic and strategic plans of the school. This includes visionary leadership for the offices of budget and finance, information technology and facility operations. The Associate Dean supervises the management of the School’s financial resources, including forecasting, budgeting, risk management, reporting, and compliance. They also supervise current and future operational facilities, including construction and renovation projects.Additionally, the Associate Dean is responsible for ensuring that the School’s technology infrastructure remains first in class, that new technologies are adopted to improve efficiencies, and that data is collected, extracted and used responsibly in decision-making processes across the School. The  Associate Dean will design, implement and execute ongoing improvement for these administrative activities and ensure their alignment with the School’s strategic initiatives. As a key member of the Dean’s leadership team, the  Associate Dean will represent the School and the Dean to University and financial leadership. The Associate Dean will serve as a resource, consultant, and strategic problem solver for area coordinators and other leaders within McIntire. The Associate Dean’s portfolio includes administrative processes, financial management, information technology, and business operations, which comprise a team of  26 professionals.Key ResponsibilitiesStrategy & PlanningServe as a key member of the School’s  leadership teamAnalyzing and modeling the resource implications of scenarios and contributing to decision makingAdvise school leadership on matters related to resourcing  strategic planning efforts as well as implementing action steps related to strategic planning for operational excellence.Consistently review operational plans and refine them, as needed, to ensure that results are achievedBudget & FinanceBuild a multiyear financial plan that reflects the goals of the School’s strategic and academic  plans.Serve as the primary representative and liaison, after the Dean, between the University and School on financial, operating, and capital project issuesParticipate as an active thought partner with the Dean and others in decision-making roles to manage academic, research, and operational initiatives in a manner that is fiscally responsible and in support of the overall financial health of the School.Work closely with the School’s leadership to ensure the School’s financial plan is in alignment with the mission and strategy of the School.Collaborate  with the Executive Director for the McIntire Foundation to ensure alignment and efficiencies across the two organizations.Monitor and evaluate operating performance, match overall School sources and uses, and determine levels of private support required to maintain the School’s balanced budget; Undertake these responsibilities by working with the Business Office and the Executive Director for the Foundation to move funds between the School and Foundation as appropriateCoordinate all financial management processes and reports with School leaders, particularly the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs, the Senior Associate Dean for External Relations, Associate Dean for Student Support and Administration and the Executive Director for Graduate Marketing & Admissions. .Talent Acquisition, Retention, and Management:Lead supervisor meetings, assess and develop talent, implement and update policies, and advise the School on HR-related matters in collaboration with the university HR partner.Work closely with all units of the School to ensure equitable hiring practices that yield a highly skilled and qualified workforce.Mentor and support staff while also helping them grow through professional development opportunities.Proactively address people management issues to ensure that all staff are supported in doing their highest and best work.Cultivate a culture of creativity, flexibility, mutual respect, integrity, and shared accountability, motivating strong teams to continue to provide a high level of service to units across the School.Administrative Operations:Manage the day-to-day operations of reporting areas in the portfolio, including information technology, budget & finance, and facility operations.Lead this talented and growing team toward the achievement of objectives and key results.Successfully develop and manage highly productive relationships with key constituents, including senior university administration, peers across Grounds and members of the McIntire community.Work closely with outside vendors to achieve operational excellence.Ensure efficiency in all processes; maximize the use of technology to facilitate operational improvements, utilize data to inform and drive decision making, and continue the tradition of outstanding customer service-focused management.The successful candidate will be a financially and technologically savvy, innovative, service-focused, and collaborative leader who provides forward-thinking and tailored strategic financial and administrative counsel. The ideal candidate will bring a high level of integrity, superior professional standards and be a strategic thought partner, focusing on constructive solutions helping to move the School forward. They will possess superb communication skills essential to work collaboratively and effectively across academic units and within the office. The ideal candidate will have notable executive-level business experience in the private, public, and/or nonprofit sectors.
