About the Operating Room:
UC Medical Center is the regions only level one trauma center and academic medical center.  UCMC’s Perioperative Services is expanding with the construction of 8 additional state of the art operating suites, pre and post recovery bays, sterile processing and a new pre-admission testing clinic.  Slated to open in early 2023, these additions will increase UC Health’s ability to provide outstanding care to patients and their families
The Certified Surgical Technologist will provide clinical and technical support to patients receiving care in the operating room. The major focus is on the scrub role, but may also include an assistant circulator role under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Certified Surgical Technologist has 2 years of experience and will be able to take on more patient care related tasks and complicated cases. The Surgical Technologist II works under the direction of and supervision of a Lead Surgical Technologist, a Registered Nurse or Physician and in accordance with the legal scope of competency and within established standards of care, policies and procedures. The Surgical Technologist has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure safe, quality patient care during the operative procedure and serves as a preceptor.

Responsibilities:
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
Engages in population appropriate communication.
Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Operations, Training & Demonstration: The ST will be able to explain and demonstrate procedures.
• Preparation of the surgical suite and advanced understanding of the procedures being performed.
• Maintains and ensures operational readiness of instruments and equipment, departmental supplies and sterilized items.
• Checks for outdated supplies.
• Ensures correct counting of instruments, needles and/or sharps before during and at the closure of the patient.
• Anticipates the need for intraoperative supplies, equipment and needs of the surgeon in a timely manner. K
• Knowledge of advanced surgical techniques for the team on which he/she is based, plus an ability to move between teams with ease.
• Knowledge related to emergency situations and ability to assist or first scrub on advanced team related procedures.
• This may include transplant, trauma, vascular or robotics, neuro and spine and complex orthopedics procedures.
• Has been oriented and proficient in first scrubbing a trauma and can take call without problems or issues.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the needs of the surgeon and resident/fellow and how to incorporate the learner into the procedure, facilitating a good learning experience.
• Operates a variety of equipment as directed.
• Checks for outdated equipment and reports as needed.
• Ensures and maintains competency on all new equipment and technology, and can act as a super user if needed. A
• Able to precept other Surgical Technologist's and/or other scrub personnel as needed in the procedures of his/her team and to help as a resource if called upon.
• Is able to second circulate under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse.
Meets Requirements:
• The ST will meet all the requirements of the Surgical Technologist and demonstrates advanced knowledge and expertise in a variety of surgical specialties and proficient practice in the first scrub role in the majority of surgical procedures.
• The ST demonstrates orientation toward service excellence by conducting daily activities, communications, and interactions in a cooperative, positive and professional manner.

Other Duties:
• Is available to the Perioperative Team Manager and Daily Operations Manager for assignment as needed to meet the operational needs of Perioperative Services.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED minimum required. Associate's degree in surgical technology, preferred degree.
Years of Experience: One to two years equivalent experience, minimum required
Required Certifications : Must be certified by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), and maintain that certification.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Computer literacy; demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
