Forensic Support Specialist
Job Description:
Application Deadline: January 6, 2023 at 5pm EST.
The preferred hiring amount is between to $17.01 to $22.32 an hour ($35,373.05 to $46,425.60 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. The position also provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City’s retirement options, and continuing education/training opportunities.
The Forensic Support Specialist position in the Charlottesville Police Department performs technical and administrative work related to the receiving, storing, releasing and destroying of evidence.
– Ensures proper procedures are followed for receiving, storing, releasing, and destroying evidence.
– Prepares and maintains case files and records pertaining to evidence analysis, weapons tracing, court orders, and others.
– Enters and updates data in a variety of department-specific, state and federal databases. May run specialized traces on evidence.
– Maintains and classifies ten print fingerprint cards.
– Assists Police Officers, Detectives, the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, other police agencies, State Laboratory personnel, Attorneys, citizens and others with evidence and property related matters.
– Transport evidence to and from State Lab, and for destruction, and other related matters.
– Required to testify in court regarding the chain of custody of evidence.
– Performs annual audit of evidence and property inventory.
– May take photographs of crime victims as it relates to the Victim Witness Office.
– Performs related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
– Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED.
– Minimum of 1 year of related administrative support work experience.
– Must be able to obtain a VCIN certification within three (3) months.
– Valid Virginia driver’s license is required by employment start date.
– Must pass a criminal background check.
