The role of a Surgical Technologist is to provide clinical and technical support to patients receiving care in the operating room. The major focus is on the scrub role, but may also include an assistant circulator role under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities:
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in a variety of surgical specialties and the initiative to continually expand and refine clinical skills.
Applies the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to provide optimum patient care.
Provides a safe, efficient environment for the surgical patients. Is able to recognize emergency situations and institutes established corrective actions.
Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and knowledge of step-by-step procedures for specific surgical interventions.
Communicates with the Perioperative Team Manager, Primary Nurse and/or Specialty Tech regarding changes to surgeon preference sheets, case cart sheets, and service manuals based on surgeon requests and current practice and knowledge.
Recognizes the importance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation. Anticipates the needs of the perioperative team in order to expedite patient care.
Exhibits knowledge of care and use of all equipment, instruments and supplies used for surgical procedures.
Establishes and maintains positive customer service relationships:
• Exhibits a professional image toward all customers. Anticipates customer needs in order to continually improve service and quality of patient care. Respects the patients' right to privacy, dignity and safety.
Is available to the Perioperative Team Manager and Daily Operations Manager for assignment as needed to meet the operational needs of Perioperative Services.
Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of an approved school of surgical technology. Approved programs involve 2 years of education and on-the-job practice (clinicals).
Years of Experience: Demonstrate competency and possess the technical skills appropriate for assigned surgical cases and utilizes those skills to assist others.
