Lab Technician Department: Veterinary Services Department Compensation: $17/hr. $22/hr. (Based on Experience)
Job Summary
The Lab Technician is responsible to perform necropsies and diagnostics and assist in the preparation and production of autogenous biologics for vaccine use in ducks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Vaccine Lab
• Performs media preparation and autoclaving of glassware.
• Samples media batches to ensure they meet quality control standards.
• Follow SOPs for inoculation and propagation of autogenous bacterin.
• Measure pH, turbidity and serial dilutions of bacterin batches.
• Releases product batches for bottling once they have met all compliance standards.
• Bottles finished products.
• Monitors and records data daily during production weeks.
• Maintains vaccine inventory and assists in planning out production schedule.
• Organizes and maintains bacterial seeds and freezes more seeds as necessary.
• Assists with research and development of new vaccines.
• Follows in field vaccine trials including but not limited to, monitoring flock health, weighing ducks, feeding ducks, taking blood samples.
• Analyzes data from research trials and reports findings.
• Maintains general lab cleanliness.
• Diagnostics
• Receive samples from field into the lab.
• Perform necropsy and record findings.
• Aseptically sample organs for plating for bacterial growth.
• Perform gram staining and other biochemical tests for identification of bacteria.
• Communicates results of bacterial diagnostics to Live Production Team within 24 hours of necropsy.
• Writes necropsy report with findings and results to send out to grower.
• Follow SOPs for proper cleaning and disinfection of necropsy suite.
• Measures vaccine for all company farm vaccinations.
• General data analysis, when needed, including feed mill performance reports, grower performance reports, and egg data reports.
• Oversees and keeps records on all avian influenza testing for company participation in the NPIP program.
• Maintain safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, complying with legal codes and regulations.
• Report any animal welfare related issues to management immediately.
• Report any damages to company vehicles and equipment via eMaintenance work order program.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Minimum Required Qualifications
• AA/BS/BA degree in related field preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of equivalent experience in an animal agriculture or lab setting required; poultry facility preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Outstanding communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to independently make decisions with minimum supervision.
• Ability to multitask and effectively prioritize workload.
• Knowledge of animal welfare and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Advanced personal computer skills: Working knowledge of Excel and Outlook.
• Strong teamwork skills with a willingness to assist others.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to comply with all company policies and procedures.
