The Surgical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care before, during, and after surgery The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks which permit the surgeon to complete an efficient and safe operation.

Responsibilities:
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY) Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Clinical Skills Performed Under Direct Supervision of Surgeon. - Position the patient: Giving consideration to patient's comfort and safety while achieving the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. Padding all points of pressure: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, & axially region. Prevents impairment of circulation using a tourniquet for some procedures. Guards against nerve damage. Knowledge about common positions related to surgical procedures and is able to use the following equipment for positioning: fracture tables, head stabilizers, body stabilizers, C-arm extensions, and any other equipment needed. Evaluates the patient for any possible positioning damage following the procedure and reports abnormal conditions to the surgeon. Assists in the treatment and documentation of abnormal conditions. Providing visualization of the operative site by following: Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding. Packing with sponges. Digital tissues. Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging. Manipulation of suture materials: loops, tags, running sutures. Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with homeostasis: Permanent: Temporary: Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes: Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or nonabsorbable material. Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips. Closing skin with method indicated by surgeon. Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon. Performs other techniques as required. Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings which may include liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping, or immobilizing dressing. Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
Customer Service - Participates in the evaluation of new programs, procedures, equipment, etc. designed to improve service to customers. Communicates in a positive and respectful manner with patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital departments. Respects each patient's personal dignity. Provides considerate, respectful care focused on the patient's individual needs. Respects patient information by keeping it confidential. Recognizes and appreciates the value of cultural and professional diversity.
Performs other related duties as required, including but not limited to: - Participates in the orientation of new staff. Assist in decision making and problem solving. Participates in activities as required in surgical lab. Participates in education of surgical team. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills :
Education: Certification from NSAA, CFA, PA-C or CRNFA.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, excellent eye-hand coordination and ability to stand for long periods.
