JOB TITLE: Bus Mechanic I
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Supervisor of Fleet Maintenance
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs responsible skilled work repairing and maintaining gasoline and diesel powered equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the bus garage supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs preventive maintenance and services equipment.
• Assists in repairing and maintaining gasoline and diesel powered school buses and other automotive equipment.
• Performs Department of Education required periodic preventive maintenance and diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, changes and repairs tires and maintains grease room including the inventory and records.
• Services automotive assemblies, systems and accessories such as drive train and rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, and hydraulic compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, air-conditioning electrical systems and components.
• Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, specialized tools and devices, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, grinders, drill presses, hydraulic lift, impact wrench and hand tools.
• Responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service.
• Prepares records and files.
• Assists other mechanics.
• Washes buses and other vehicles.
• Performs duties of substitute school bus driver as needed.
• Performs other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Education and experience required include any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, as well as considerable automotive inspection.  Some mechanical repair experience is required, including some experience in repairing and maintaining diesel-powered equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of the operation and repair of the components, systems and accessories of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and machinery; thorough knowledge of tools, gauges, machinery and shop equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of transit equipment; ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted parts; ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations.
• Possession of/or willingness (within 12 months of employment) to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, use of fingers, grasping and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.
