About the College/Unit/Department
In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.
Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.
In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

Position Summary
This position works under the direction of the ADS Farm Manager with guidance from the Tifton FRS Superintendent and the Tifton ADS Senior Farm Manager to jointly provide leadership and oversight of farm operations at the Tifton Animal and Dairy Science Farm. The Assistant Farm Manager is responsible for daily supervision of employee(s) who are responsible for meeting the forage production needs (corn silage, summer annuals, winter annuals, Bermuda grass hay, ext.) for the Tifton/Alapaha Beef Units.
This individual will be expected to manage and oversee the lagoon systems and keep accurate records in compliance with the Certified Nutrient Management Plan. The individual will be responsible for maintaining a valid certified operator for CNMP and pesticide applicator license for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Assistant Farm Manager will be responsible for preventative and routine maintenance of equipment at the Tifton Animal and Dairy Science Farm and supporting units.
This individual will also be responsible for non-routine repairs on equipment located at the Beef Unit. This individual will work with the Tifton FRS Superintendent and the Tifton ADS Senior Farm Manager to prioritize repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities. This individual will have experience in mechanic work. This individual will follow written protocol while assisting in research trials and will assist research technicians when utilizing farm assets.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
• Farm management experience
• Knowledge and competence of feed-based row crop production and forage and row-crop management practices and agronomic practices for growing and harvesting crops required for the feeding and maintenance of beef cattle.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work activities involved in a beef farm operation and those involved in forage production and field research work.
• Ability to implement and conduct research field trials under the direction of research scientists and Tifton ADS Senior Farm Manager.
• Ability to maintain the necessary research and beef management records as specified by research scientists and the Tifton ADS Senior Farm Manager.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to utilize computer technology including e-mail, excel, and other recordkeeping programs.

• Provide daily leadership and oversight of the farm staff by pre-planning duties and tasks for employees, evaluating production needs, and watching weather patterns to plan best practices.
• Participate in planning, organizing, managing, and overseeing the daily operation of the Tifton ADS Farm. Including assignment of tasks to farm personnel for various jobs to keep research and farm management unit operating properly.
• Maintains daily field records in an organized and accessible format. Submitting land utilization records each year.
• Keeps management and Research Scientists apprised of the current and anticipated status of research and fieldwork and makes recommendations for changes or adjustments when necessary.
• Carries out experimental procedures without the direct supervision of Research Scientists as determined in research protocols.
• Oversees the maintenance and appearance of facilities, machinery, and equipment.
• Determines the needs of shop supplies, fuel, oil, fertilizer, pesticides, and animal health supplies and submits recommendations to management.
• This is also a "working manager" role in which hands-on tasks of animal care, farm maintenance, and operation are expected.

• Involved with maintaining and providing routine vaccination, deworming and health programs.
• Under the direction of the Tifton ADS Senior Farm Manager, works with the institutional animal care to ensure the proper care of animals on the farm.

• Provides effective communication within and outside of the UGA system, including with producers and the general public, assists in planning farm visits by various stakeholders including industry clientele, hosting field days for local community groups, visiting faculty, etc.
