About Our Job
Do you enjoy working outside and landscaping? The Landscape Worker opportunity involves activities of landscape maintenance and operations of landscape equipment to maintain transportation rights of way throughout Sarasota County as directed by the Operational Manager.
This position requires knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance practices.
Job Description:
Safely operate, fuel, and perform basic maintenance functions on equipment including gas-powered zero-turn commercial grade landscape mowers, Wide Area Mowers, commercial grade pick-up trucks, trailers (pulling up to a 30 ft. trailer), tree chippers, skid loaders, small excavators, and front-end loaders.
Perform small-engine repairs and equipment maintenance utilizing both hand, power, and pneumatic tools. Occasionally operate water trucks for landscape irrigation.
Safely operate, fuel, and perform maintenance functions on equipment including gas-powered string trimmers stick edgers, pole saws, backpack blowers, chain saws, 4-wheel drive utility carts, and other miscellaneous small hand-operated landscape maintenance tools.
Perform small-engine repairs, maintenance, and safety checks on all the above listed equipment. These tasks will require the use of pneumatic, power and hand tools.
Utilize and follow diagrams, maps, written instructions, and blueprints to install landscaping according to plans or to perform right-of-way maintenance according to plans.
Right-of-way maintenance work includes hand weeding, mulching, digging, turf trimming, tree trimming, hand collection and disposal of litter, removal and installation of plant materials and trees, and driving on roads and vegetated maintenance areas.
Work shall normally occur in transportation rights-of-way with active automobile traffic which will require the implementation of appropriate maintenance of traffic-safety standards and wearing of safety equipment.
Additional Right of Way maintenance tasks include mowing rights-of-way, line-of-sight clearance, maintaining irrigated and non-irrigated landscaped medians, including irrigation repairs, pesticide applications, ornamental turf and hardscaping areas, right-of-way and stormwater area maintenance as required, pavers and other hardscape repairs.
This position involves moderate to heavy manual labor and consists of routine and repetitive duties that may be performed without immediate supervision.
Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday
* Four (4) Ten hours days Monday - Thursday (November thru May); Five (5) Ten hour days Monday - Friday (June thru October).
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in landscaping, contract mowing or landscape grounds maintenance.
A valid Florida Driver’s License is required AND a CDL Class "B" with Tanker endorsement is required within six (6) months from hire date.
Must obtain Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Certification (IMOT) within six (6) months from hire date.
Must obtain Right-of-Way Public Pesticide Applicator’s Certification within (1) year from date of hire.
Preferred Qualification: Class "A" CDL with Tanker endorsement.
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
