Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Museum Exhibit Technician is responsible for the technical work in the design, fabrication, and repair of both gallery and wayside exhibits at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. This position is the chief designer of in-house exhibit projects and is the lead liaison with external contractors, etc. used in exhibit design and construction. The Museum Exhibit Technician consults with the education and programming staff to ensure historical accuracy and adherence to exhibit themes. It is also responsible for all graphic elements utilized in exhibits and wayfinding at the museum and ensures that the museum follows all graphic standards. This position is supervised by the Director of Visitor and Administrative Services and is evaluated through the analysis of the aesthetics and effectiveness of designs, quality of exhibit installations, and adherence to project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Supervision of outside designers and contractors
• Consults with Museum Director on current and future exhibits
• Manage site exhibits and gallery operations
• Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of special events, rentals, and ad programs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:
• Must have personal computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic communications.
• Must possess some experience working with hand tools.
• Must have experience in production of signs and banners.
• Must have experience in setting up and operating professional audio/visual equipment for displays (TV monitors, media players, projectors, etc.).
• Must have had course work in three-dimensional design.
• Must have a valid NC driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be able to walk extensively throughout the site.
Management preferences: • Experience in working with historical artifacts.
• Possess construction/carpentry skills.
• Experience in three-dimensional design.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree in art, art history, design or related field from an appropriately accredited institution with course work in three-dimensional design and two years of experience in museum exhibit design; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
