Your Specific Responsibilities
This is an independent, professional position serving as an Assistant Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Coordinator (HAI section) of the Virology Unit at the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories (BPHL) in Tampa.  This position reports directly to the Arbovirus Serology and Environmental Surveillance Supervisor. Duties are performed under general supervision and involve considerable independent judgement. Duties are related to the examination of specimens for the detection of arboviral disease agents. All work is performed in coordination with the Arbovirus Serology and Environmental Surveillance Supervisor and the Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Coordinator, who have overall responsibility for the testing performed in this section.
The position assists the Sentinel Chicken Surveillance Coordinator with the following:

Coordinating and performing the Hemagglutination Inhibition Assay (HAI) testing on non-clinical specimens.

Preparing and processing specimens.

Preparing reagents and media for use in virology procedures.

Maintaining a schedule for reagent preparation and inventory.

Accessioning non-clinical specimens including assigning laboratory numbers to specimens and monitoring specimen quality.

Analyzing results and entering test results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or other databases

Training technicians and students to perform the HAI test and prepare reagents.

Performing quality assurance procedures and quality control testing.

Maintaining an inventory of laboratory supplies.

Performing preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Performing other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.
Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.
Skill in the use of lab equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
Minimum - Bachelor's Degree in the Chemical or Biological Sciences
State of Florida Clinical Laboratory License as a Laboratory Technician (Microbiology or Public Health Microbiology), Chapter 483 F.S and Rule 6483 F.A.C or eligible for license.
Preferred - 6 months of Laboratory experience
