The mission of the NC Division of State Historic Sites, Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, is to preserve, maintain, operate, interpret, and develop the historic properties and attendant historic resources significant to the state's overall history. A state historic site is a property of cultural and educational significance to the residents and visitors of North Carolina. Historic Sites are organized into geographic localities, which serve as a medium for communicating the economic, cultural, and political development of the state.
The N.C. Transportation Museum (NCTM) is a statewide heritage tourism attraction and museum that has an annual visitation of approximately 158,000 visitors each year. It is located in Rowan County in the city of Spencer, NC. It is the second most visited historic site under the section administration. Historically, the location was the heart of Southern Railroads main steam and later diesel locomotive repair facility. The complex was first started in 1896. The large Back Shop, Barber Junction Station, the Robert Julian Roundhouse, the Master Mechanic's Office, the Flue Shop, Paint Shop, and other surviving buildings provide a seldom viewed example of the creation, sustenance and decline of a single-industry and transportation history in North Carolina. The NCTM is devoted to the history of transportation in North Carolina. Modes of  transportation being preserved range from trains to trucks, cars to aircraft, covered wagons to canoes, and all types in between.
The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources' (DNCR) vision is to be the leader in using the state's natural and cultural resources to build the social, cultural, educational and economic future of North Carolina. Our mission is to improve quality of life by creating opportunities to experience excellence in the arts, history, libraries and nature throughout North Carolina. The Department works to stimulate learning, inspire creativity, preserve the state's history, conserve the state's natural heritage, encourage recreation and cultural tourism, and promote economic development. Our goal is to promote equity and inclusion among our employees and our programming to reflect and celebrate our state's diverse population, culture, and history by expanding engagement with diverse individuals and communities.
