The LCRI is investigating the production, storage, delivery, and use of low-carbon chemical energy resources – such as hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels, and biofuels – needed to enable affordable pathways to economy-wide decarbonization by mid-century. The position serves as a co-lead for the Delivery & Storage technical subcommittee. The speed, efficiency, and cost of transitioning to low-carbon energy carriers will be impacted by the ability to incorporate existing infrastructure and equipment in delivery, storage, and use. LCRI will support the expansion of EPRI’s research capabilities in the areas of materials characterization, failure analysis, and repair and lead research projects to evaluate material properties of components and the applicability under new conditions. The position involves organizing and leading research, development, and demonstration projects related to transporting and storing hydrogen, ammonia, other low carbon fuels, and CO2. The position will engage with LCRI members and global stakeholders to develop a wide range of research projects. Responsibilities will include:
• Design and oversight of research and demonstration studies that will advance the state-of-knowledge for expanded use of hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels, and/or synthetic fuels
• Evaluating technologies for potential improvements and considers adoption pathways for deployment
• Identify opportunities to expand use of science and technologies from other sectors and industries
• Assume responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required
• Prepare proposals, technical publications, and delivers presentations
• Lead national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations
• Organize meetings with LCRI sponsors to provide updates on research activities, seek feedback on research plans, delivery technology transfer, and communicate value of research results
Seeking comprehensive knowledge and experience in the following areas:
• Metallic and non-metallic materials to enable storage, delivery, and use of low-carbon fuels (as described above) and waste streams (such as CO2)
• High- and low-temperature low-carbon fuel production and end use applications
• Pipeline engineering, including regulations, environmental impacts, codes and standards, NDE/inspection techniques, and integrity management considerations
• Design, planning, and technical specifications new pipelines and infrastructure (including ancillary equipment, such as compressor/compressor stations, valves, gas metering, etc.) to support pure low-carbon fuels
• Transitioning existing natural gas pipelines and infrastructure to support hydrogen blending
• Aboveground storage of cryogenic fluids, liquids and compressed gases
• Research in materials life management, asset integrity, fitness for service, failure and root cause analysis, selection for compatibility, and manufacturing and fabrication assessments
• Applications of material science and engineering in industrial, manufacturing, commercial, transportation, and power generation sectors
