Job Summary: This position reports to Equinix's SVP, Corporate Finance and Sustainability and is responsible for leading Equinix's global sustainability strategy across the areas of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) topics with an emphasis on environmental and social impact and accelerating Equinix's progress on our 2030 global climate-neutral commitment and evolving Equinix's commitments and integration around ESG. The role will lead the Sustainability Program Office team charged with identifying and integrating high-priority sustainability and ESG goals across the business.
Responsibilities
• Cross-functionally provide sustainability knowledge and leadership in assembling and influencing the teams to define and implement processes, people, and systems solutions in respective ESG functions.
• Manage global sustainability SMEs and lead execution of annual priorities including annual sustainability report, rater and ranker disclosures, sales and customer engagement, investor, and analyst relations and strategic workstreams to move the needle on priority sustainability elements (e.g., decarbonization of the data center sector).
• Program manage cadence of global deliverables around reporting and evolve corporate disclosures to ensure transparency and progress.
• Drive alignment and discussion with executives and Board, as well as influencing global product leaders and other VPs and Directors to embed ESG topics into their priorities.
• Closely monitor evolving ESG trends (corporate strategies, policies/regulations, customer requirements) and recommend and develop strategies that maintain Equinix's leadership in this space.
• Manage regional (EMEA and Asia-Pacific) sustainability leads and evolve regional decision-making and execution based on the local landscape, stakeholder sentiment and evolving policies.
• Support functional leads across Operations, Global Design and Construction including Renewable Energy teams, Procurement, Public Policy/Government Affairs, Regulatory Affairs/Compliance, Marketing/PR, Community Impact, etc. to embed sustainability, set goals/commitments; market and message as appropriate.
• Proactively identify and track policies related to ESG and serve as an SME to advocate for regulations in line with Equinix's sustainability vision, including our global commitment to become climate-neutral by 2030 and reach our Science-based Target (SBT) across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
• Identify opportunities to enhance Equinix's reputation as a sustainability leader and coordinate buy-in across multiple teams to drive action.
• Expected to serve and grow as a global expert on data center, real estate, and technology-related sustainability concepts - such as progress on climate targets, sustainability reporting, energy efficiency metrics, community relations etc.
Qualifications
• 15+ years of data center, real estate, technology sector or related experience preferred with a clear track record of successfully implementing complex change management strategies across large businesses.
• 10+ years of experience in sustainability, ESG, CSR, energy/renewable energy, environmental management role or similar experience in consulting setting.
• 7+ years of people management - communicative and collaborative management style and mentor to junior and cross-functional staff.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Data Science, or relevant engineering discipline required.
• Master's, MBA, or JD preferred.
• Preference for candidates located in the Bay Area, California (other acceptable alternatives: Tampa or Dallas).
• Working knowledge of voluntary sustainability programs (e.g., CDP, GRI, The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, SASB, SBTs, TCFD etc.).
• Self-starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to translate complex sustainability topics to a broad range of audiences within a matrixed organization.
• Executive presence and a record of having worked independently across a diverse set of stakeholders in multiple time zones to scale and solve complex sustainability issues, often under tight deadlines.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively: verbally, in writing and through presentations; successfully interfacing with internal and external constituents.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally (likely no more than 10-15%).
• Technical experience developing emissions reduction strategies for data center or energy-intensive industries, including renewable energy, low-carbon fuels, carbon offsets/removals and experience setting and implementing corporate climate commitments: Science-based Targets, RE100 or net-zero commitments.
• Knowledge of existing or pending sustainability legislation and regulations relevant to data centers, real estate, and technology companies (e.g., specifics around the EU Climate Neutral Data Centre Operator Pact, EU Green Deal Directives, Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, Singapore Green Plan, U.S. SEC Climate Risk Proposal).
• Proven analytical skills translating corporate data into insights and recommendations, including understanding the levers around decarbonization and detailed understanding of The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and making credible corporate carbon reduction claims.
