JOB TITLE: School Nurse Coordinator
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Education and Related Services
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: In addition to performing the duties of a School Nurse RN, the School Nurse Coordinator is responsible for supervising the school nurses and health office staff and implementing the school health program. The School Nurse Coordinator is responsible for completing documents and performing related trainings related to the health program implementation that by the dictates of the Virginia Nurse Practice Act require a Registered Nurse (RN). Additionally, the School Nurse Coordinator provides coordination, development and reporting support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs all functions in the School Nurse RN position description, as well as:
• Serves as a resource for school nurses and school administrators.
• Develops and conducts training for employees on OSHA, bloodborne pathogens, American Heart Association training (first aid, CPR, and the use of automated external defibrillators), medication administration, glucagon/insulin administration.
• Administers or coordinates student screenings for vision, hearing and scoliosis. Also evaluates, refers and follows up as required in Virginia Code and School Board policies and regulations.
• Reviews lists of student health issues as compiled by school nurses and health office staff.
• Assists in the identification of students in need of a school health care plan.
• Assists in writing and implementing the school health care plan for identified students.
• Provides training for school staff members who are assigned to perform medical procedures or who are monitoring a student with health needs such as food allergies, diabetes, and/or seizure disorders.
• Observes the health service area to ensure compliance with legal and county requirements relating to the maintenance and function of the service area including, but not limited to, proper supplies, storing of medications, and appropriate documentation system.
• Observes and provides feedback on the practice of the school nurses and health office staff to ensure appropriate patient care, use of universal precautions and proper safety procedures, as well as proper implementation of the required screening programs.
• Submits all screening information and reports to the Virginia Department of Education.
• Reviews clinic records to ensure proper documentation, including the completion of the correct medication administration and medical procedure forms, physical examination and immunization requirements, and documentation of nursing services administered.
• Provides assistance or input in written communication as needed, particularly as communication relates to health or medical concerns.
• Provides feedback to building principals on the practice of the school nurse or health office staff and collaborates with principals in conducting annual performance evaluations of school health staff.
• Coordinates presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics for school health staff and crisis team members.
• Encourages school nurses and health office staff to participate in professional development and training addressing a range of school health issues.
• Coordinates the collection of data and compiles accurate and complete health reports as required by the school division and state agencies.
• Develops, updates, and implements written policies and procedures for the clinical services and programs addressing health issues.
• Incorporates evidence-based research practice into the school nursing program.
• Acts as a liaison and promotes positive collaboration with community providers for a range of services addressing child and adolescent health.
• Actively participates as a member of the crisis team.
• Participates and collaborates with administrators in recruitment, interviewing, selection, orientation and training of school nurses and health office staff.
• Complies with and supports school and division policies and regulations.
• Attends state and regional school nurse coordinator meetings, assumes responsibility for professional growth, and keeps skills up-to-date.
• Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
• Performs other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must hold a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Virginia and have a minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience, preferably as a school nurse. Must hold a BS in nursing or related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Is a graduate of an RN accredited nursing school
• Possesses and maintains current first aid and CPR certification
• Holds (or obtains shortly after hiring) certification as a Certified American Heart Association instructor for first aid, CPR , and the use of AED’s
• Communicates effectively in both written and verbal language
• Demonstrates sound judgment and clerical proficiency
• Works effectively with children of varying developmental stages, as well as with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and members of the school community
• Has ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
• Works well under extreme pressure, is flexible and adaptable to changing environments
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift students or to move objects. Work requires standing, walking, climbing, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust and focus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Personal and close contact with children is required. Regular contact with faculty and staff members, administration, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and/or in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals is required. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
