Job Summary:

Exempt General Definition of Work Performs intermediate professional work planning, coordinating and administering various risk management programs including employee safety, worker's compensation and property and causality claims, preparing and maintaining appropriate files and records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the Human Resources Director. Job Responsibilities:

  • Essential Functions Performs duties in accordance with the City's keys to excellent customer service; acts as a team or group leader in the implementation of adopted City outcomes and goals. 
  • Investigates all vehicular accidents and personal injuries; administers post-accident or injury drug and alcohol testing; prepares investigation reports, memos and other correspondence; maintains comprehensive records of accidents, personal injuries and related costs. 
  • Plans, schedules and conducts monthly safety meetings with all departments. 
  • Coordinates and provides specialized training and certification programs such as the defensive driving program, commercial driver's license, forklift certification, fire extinguisher training and hearing protection. 
  • Administrates third party claims of injury or damage to determine if liability exists on behalf of the City; requests negotiated settlement checks to close claim or issues formal denial. 
  • Ensures all city-owned structures receive routine inspections. 
  • Visits maintenance road crews working throughout the City and county periodically to ensure they are complying with safety regulations. 
  • Issues monthly safety reports to keep management updated as to frequency and associated costs. 
  • Reviews monthly safety reports with safety committee to make appropriate recommendations for training. 
  • Reviews and recommends levels of insurance coverage; adds or deletes coverage as needed. Works with insurance providers on all policy renewals with the goal of adequate coverage at a competitive premium. 
  • Responds to and investigates complaints. 
  • Coordinates defense discovery proceedings with legal counsel and attends meetings and settlement conferences Provides general direction in the development of loss control programs and policies. 
  • Works with and directs worker's compensation claims with physicians, rehab specialists, and attorneys regarding employee benefits.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of business methods and insurance practices.

  • ability to obtain Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in industrial engineering, industrial safety, or related field and moderate experience in industrial safety with an emphasis on analytical skills, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
