The Center for Applied Isotope Studies is the largest Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory / Radiocarbon AMS Dating Facility in the United States that is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025:2017. As an interdisciplinary research center, our scientists are experts in physical chemistry, geology, marine science, physics, archaeology, ecology and biology. Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year experience in a chemistry laboratory setting in addition to university
laboratory coursework (e.g., paid or unpaid work, internship, CURO or other lab
based research project). Experience in an analytical chemistry or research
laboratory, preferably one specializing in elemental analysis.
Position Summary
The Plasma Chemistry Laboratory ( PCL ) specializes in the elemental analyses of a variety of sample types by ICP -MS, ICP - OES , and DMA for a variety of applications in both research and industry. The PCL seeks a conscientious, thorough, and careful technician to assist the lab supervisor with sample preparation, analysis, and laboratory maintenance including, but not limited to: Sample preparation (e.g., sub sampling, sonicating, drying, weighing, acid digestion, dilution), involving both routine and complex methodologies. Maintaining the laboratory and equipment in clean and safe condition (e.g., labware, balances, ovens, instrumentation, inventory). Preparations of reagents (e.g., acids, calibration and QC solutions, cleaning solutions). Record-keeping (e.g., sample log-in, maintaining laboratory notebooks and logs, calculations, checking data).

* Knowledge of basic laboratory and wet chemistry concepts and techniques including, but not limited to: weighing, pipetting, cleaning labware, preparation of solutions, serial dilution, basic laboratory safety.
* Basic math and algebra skills.
* Basic computer skills including, but not limited to: E-mail, MS Excel, MS Word.
* Written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to take direction and work well in a team environment.
* Complex problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.
Physical Demands
Manual dexterity and penmanship. Standing/sitting for hours at a time during sample processing. Position also includes stooping, bending, squatting, lifting 30-40 lbs at a time.

Preparing samples for analysis. Preparation for routine samples will be performed according to standard operating procedures. Non-routine samples will be prepared as directed by supervisor with opportunities for input. Sample preparation involves techniques such as labeling, washing, sonication, ashing, freeze-drying, oven-drying, grinding, homogenization, scooping, weighing, pipetting, pouring, acid digestion, microwave digestion, adding reagents, heating, refluxing, transferring samples, mixing, pressing pellets, centrifugation, decanting, serial dilution, minimizing contamination, safe collection of waste, and clear communication. All safety protocols should be followed.

Preparing reagents, cleaning labware. Preparing reagents involves accurately preparing stock solutions, working solutions, calibration standards, quality control standards, cleaning solutions, and calibration blanks. Cleaning labware involves removing dirt and contamination from tools, equipment, vessels, and containers by physical and chemical means. Techniques used will include labeling, scooping, weighing, pipetting, pouring, rinsing, washing, mixing, shaking, sonication, refluxing, drying, minimizing contamination, storage of clean labware, safe collection of waste, and clear communication. Record keeping, calculations. This involves the timely and legible entry of information (e.g., readings, results, calculations, dates, parameters, and observations) into forms and logbooks, archiving paperwork, keeping logbooks and archives organized, basic math and algebra skills, basic computer skills (PC and Mac), familiarity with MS Word and Excel, logging in samples, labeling samples, data entry into digital spreadsheets, checking the calculations and data entry of other lab members, use of appropriate significant figures, and clear communication skills.

Duties/Responsibilities
Maintaining lab equipment, instrumental analyses. Maintaining lab equipment involves both scheduled and unplanned maintenance, such as oil changes, water changes, cleaning/replacement of parts, assisting with repairs, equipment warm-up, assisting with calibrations and routine performance checks, and safe collection of waste. For shared spaces and equipment this includes seeking training and permission from owner, following protocols, notifying owner of issues, and leaving the space/equipment ready for the next user. Instrumental analyses include instrument warm-up, tuning and optimization, daily performance checks, setting up the method, building a calibration curve, setting up samples and QCs, minimizing contamination, monitoring analyses, assisting with troubleshooting, and exporting data.

Maintaining lab cleanliness and organization, lab safety, other duties as assigned. This involves archiving samples, disposing of old samples (e.g., neutralization, autoclaving, shipping), keeping equipment and lab surfaces clean and dust-free, identifying and rectifying safety hazards, maintaining chemical inventory, assisting with waste pickup, notifying supervisor of low stock, checking lab e-mail during work hours, picking up packages from front office, putting away supplies, administrative tasks, demonstrating tasks to new lab members, assisting with lab tours/demonstrations, and other duties as assigned. There may be an opportunity for cross-training in other CAIS labs.
