Medical Staff Specialist - Piedmont Athens
JOB PURPOSE:
To coordinate the non-clinical aspects of the day to day operations of the medical staff office. This position
will provide best practice administrative support services for all aspects of the Medical Staff Services
Department. Accountability will be expected in coordination of practitioner competency systems; policies,
procedures and documents; support of Medical Staff Leadership; Medical Staff Office operations; Medical
Staff and hospital collaboration and leadership by demonstrating current practices and by using and
integrating technology. The Credentialing Specialist will be responsible for developing systems that support
the Medical Staff and Hospital’s mission and strategic plan.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree is required OR equivalent experience equal to six (6) years of experience beyond the
minimum experience required will be accepted in lieu of degree.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Three (3) years administrative experience preferably in a healthcare related field; ability to compose letters
and meeting minutes; basic knowledge of hospital and/or medical staff affairs.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
None.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with promoting excellent customer service.
Experience in healthcare.
Certified Professional Medical Services Management (CPMSM); and or
Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) preferred or eligible to sit for the exam.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Independently works to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies. Meets with CMS,
TJC and DNV surveyors to answer questions regarding regulatory requirements.
• Educates physicians and other hospital staff members on regulatory requirements and establishes to
ensure compliance to mitigate risk to the facility (e.g. negligent credentialing, discrimination).
• Develops and implements credentialing/privileging process and procedures. Reviews new and
reappointment applications submitted by the CVO.
• Determines if applications are complete. Identifies issues and follows up as needed with program
directors, peer references, and malpractice insurance to ensure that the file is complete prior to
review by the Department Chair and Credentials Committee.
• Reviews each application with department chair and answers question that he/she may have
regarding the application
• Works independently to prepare materials for Credentials Committee, Medical Executive Committee
and boards.
• Oversees development of and adherence to Medical Staff Bylaws. Serves as an advisor to facility
leadership (Medical Staff and Administration) to ensure uniformity and fairness.
• Organizes Fair Hearing process. Ensures the Bylaws are followed and the provider is given his/her
due process to avoid potential legal action for the facility.
• Analyzes practitioner performance improvement and quality/peer review data to be submitted for
medical staff reappointment.
• Prepares and manages the Emergency Department Call schedule to avoid an EMTALA risk to the
facility
• Determines applicant’s eligibility for medical staff membership and clinical privileges.
• Recognizes, investigates and validates discrepancies and adverse information obtained from the
application, primary source verifications, or other sources to ensure that review and approval bodies
have the information needed to make informed credentialing decisions.
• Available to medical staff leadership for early morning meetings and evening meetings. On call
(nights and weekends) for medical staff issues from the hospital staff, medical staff leadership and
Administration.
• Advises the Medical Staff when legal counsel should be sought relating to issues such as
credentialing, privilege restriction, medical staff membership, restraint of trade and peer review.
