JOB TITLE:  Student Assistance/Mental Health Coordinator
Job Description :
The Student Assistance Counselor shall have leadership ability, a thorough knowledge of alcohol, drug, and tobacco prevention and rehabilitation and mental health issues , a thorough knowledge of student assistance counseling, the ability to effectively and cooperatively work with teaching staff members, students, parents, other district and local assistance program representatives, and the administration.
Reports to :  School Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or other related area of study.
• Licensed in Professional Discipline (LCSW, LPCC, LMFT, LCADC), preferred.
• Minimum of five years’ experience counseling adolescents in a professional setting
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Computer skills using email, etc.
• Basic knowledge of specific subject matter to which assigned.
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

ABILITY TO:

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement a Student Assistance Program that contains a substance abuse prevention program and mental health curriculum.
• Develop, arrange, and implement classroom presentations for students to inform them of the Student Assistance Program services through brochures, assemblies, daily announcements, posters, displays, and team-teaching activities when appropriate.
• Develop and implement in-service programs for instructional staff concerning substance abuse identification, referral prevention and procedures, and mental health issues.
• Assist the administration in complying with procedures for the identification of students possibly abusing alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or other substances.
• Provide group or individual support for students identified as experiencing crisis, trauma, or needing support with alcohol, drug, tobacco, or mental health issues.
• Assist the administration and/or parents in obtaining information about procedures and practices for intervention and referral for treatment services of abusing or at-risk students.
• Develop and implement group and/or individual counseling sessions for students concerning drug and alcohol abuse education, prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation, and mental health issues.
• Maintain the required confidentiality of the program.
• Follow through on all activities involving students from initial referral to the final determination and possible treatment and return to school for those needing external treatment.
• Adhere to the requirements of any district or school employee handbook, Owensboro Board of Education policies and all applicable laws and regulations
• Cooperate with local, state, federal, and approved private agencies that are involved with student health, drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
• Perform any other activities as required by the administration in the areas of drug, alcohol, tobacco, or mental health issues.
• Assist with the provision of in-service training of school district staff concerning substance abuse issues and other state-mandated topics including suicide, physical/sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and bullying.
• Assist the district in revising and implementing substance abuse policies and procedures, as well as other policies including suicide, physical/sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and bullying.
• Provide counseling services to pupils regarding substance abuse and other behavioral or mental health issues.
• Refer students and families to appropriate community resources for ongoing behavioral health treatment.
• Collaborate with family members to address academic, behavioral, social, and mental health issues.
• Collaborate with other faculty during Intervention and Referral Services, Child Study Team and “504” meetings.
• Participate in individual case conferencing with teachers, parents, guidance counselors, child study team members, and administrators.
• Prepare and deliver oral presentations.
• Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
• Represent the school in the community effectively and in a positive manner while upholding and enforcing district and school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relations and open lines of communication with colleagues, subordinates, students, parents, and community.
• Individually and cooperatively supervise pupils in and out of classroom activities during the assigned work day.
• Works in conjunction with the Youth Service Center Coordinator to assist in meeting needs of students to be successful in school.
• Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
• Other duties as assigned by the principal.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor, environmentally controlled.  Office/school environment including but not limited to telephones, personal interruptions, background noises.  Will require working with or near the public, parents, and with children and will be subject to sounds, scents, and other related environmental factors.  This position will require dealing with conflict and requires use of sound judgement.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Classified Evaluation Plan.  The evaluation will be conducted by the Principal.
